    new lovebird with problem

Zulu and Lulu are 2.5 months old. Zulu is perfectly healthy. Lulu was taken to the vet 2 weeks ago for redness and feather loss around the eyes. New feathers look defective. After 1.5 weeks of antibiotic tx for what the vet thought was a bacterial eye infection, i have seen no change. If no change, I am to take her back for possible mite infestation and injections. The appointment is a few days off, so I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their lovebird?

Was this a Avian vet? If it was not, find another vet, an Avian vet.

Wouldn't take my birds to anyone other than avian vet. I like to do research myself, too, and wondered if anyone else had experienced the same symptoms in their lovebird.

That's great that you have a avian vet, should know what they are doing then. Would not think mites, usually show on beak and legs not around eyes. If vet had thought mites, would have treated for that right away and not waited.

I have never saw or heard of it in a bird, poor girl hopefully the vet will be able to figure it out. I have no ideas to give you at all, sorry but I do hope they will figure it out so she can get better soon and I hope it is not bothering her at all. Please keep us informed, I am curious to what is bothering her.

Returned from the vet a little while ago. In addition to the redness and feather loss around eyes, Lulu looked fluffed, tired, closing her eyes while Zulu was going wild around the cage. We are txing with oral antibiotics, cipro to be exact. I am worried. Should see a change in a few days if it has anything to do with bacterial infection.

Did the vet do any tests? Be sure to keep her warm, with easy access to food and water. I hope she gets better soon.

    Re: new lovebird with problem

Thanks to all for your interest. Lulu is better - lively, playful, chirping, but I see no improvement in the redness, feather loss, defective feather regrowth around the eyes. The vet says he will do a skin scraping from around the eyes but Lulu will need to be sedated to do it! If it is mites, she is the only one of the 4 birds with the problem. If it's allergy related, I don't know what the tx would be. Does anyone know sof wevsites that discuss symptoms/diseases in lovebirds?
