Loki is not very lucky. Her "treat" mix is what most birds get on a daily basis in their food dishes! She gets a ready made mix by Verse-Laga - the African mix which contains:
    Striped sunflower seeds
    White sunflower seeds
    Safflowerseed
    Maxi VAM pellets
    Pointed oats
    Corn
    Paddy rice
    Wheat
    Buckwheat
    Barley
    Peanut kernels
    Pumpkin kernels
    Dari
    Pine nuts
    Carobs
    Canary seed
    Hempseed
    Oyster shells
    White millet
    Puffed wheat
    Milo
    Popcorn
    Rosehip
    Red peppers

To it, I add dried chili peppers and drief fruit; occasionally crackers, bread or cereal. She really devours it. I put it in all her foraging dishes to really make her think.

What brand dried fruit do you use? I ordered some "Just tomatoes" dried fruit mix because of the no added sugar. I'm going to be adding that to their Goldenfeast Brazilian Blend/Bigger Birdie Bite (organic veggie/pepper/herb bird cookie things) treat mix they have now---again, like you, a mix that is something that most birds just get to eat as food, ha ha ha. I've never heard of Verse-Laga before though, where do you get it?

I actually get trail mix (the paradise mix i think!) at the bulk store and pick out the fruits. They are high in sugar, yes, but a better variety since the pet store sells a bag of dried papaya or a bag of dried cranberries; no mixes.

Verse-Laga is what they feed at Loro Parque in Tenerife, Spain (TANGENT - which houses the largest parrot collection in the WORLD!!! they do a ton of research and conservation as well - hopefully will be going in 2010 for the World Parrot Conference). I get it at a local pet store that specializes in bird items. I don't even know if it's available online but good bird stores will probably order it in since it's an AMAZING mix. THey have diets for lories, amazons (lower fat), greys and a variety of other species with specific nutrient/energy requirements.

I still say our birds are living it PRETTY good!

    Re: Treat mixes

THIS is the fruit mix I got for the birds. It looks so yummy I may be stealing from them so I can have some fruit bits in my cereal too. I actually got it from Chopper's Toys, so it was a teensy bit cheaper.

And you got that right about our birds living well! My husband and I are students, and all our organic stuff goes to the birds. Hopefully one day we'll be able to catch up ourselves.

I will check out Verse-Laga! It sounds like a really good mix.

    Treats? What are those

I just give nutriberries and millet as my bird's treats, I never really thought of giving them other things as treats :o They do get a variety of pellets, goldenfeast, avicakes, and veggies as their normal diet tho...so I guess more treats just never crossed my mind!

    Re: Treat mixes

Well, I guess Peachee and my treat mixes aren't really treats per say, heh heh heh. We just like tricking the fids into thinking they're getting bad stuff when they're really not. They of course get the occasional peanut or sunflower seed, and millet.

    Re: Treat mixes

Oh oh I forgot to mention popcorn. The fids loooove popcorn. The first time I was eating it with Otter out he jumped in the MIDDLE of my bowl of popcorn and had a grand old time throwing it all over the place. He'd nibble a piece then see how far he could chuck it. My dog was very jealous. Throwing some popcorn (air-popped is the best o' course ) in the treat mixes would make the fids ecstatic.
