    Exclamation Home at last!!! (pics)

Tonight was the first full day i had with my new lovie "Marisol". She is such a thrill seeker, even though her wings are clipped, she tries to fly onto my shoulder. What a cheeky girl! Already she is settling in. she has found many new toys and perches and so on. but her two absolute favorite things is 1) going in my shirt and 2) sitting on my shoulder. Sometime next week i am planning on introducing her to the shower perch. She hasnt shown much interest in her bath since she has been here, but i know that it will come in time. Today we spent 4 hours together, just hanging out. she is such an outgoing bird. unfortunately she forgot her tricks i taught her awhile ago... but i will re-teach her. i would really like to get her a hanging play gym for when her wings grow back, but im worried about the expense. i will post pictures of her cage and her tomorow. right now i have to put her to sleep. see you all later!!!

    Welcome home, Marisol!

I'm sure that she's settling in nicely. I can't wait to hear more about her; Fischer's lovebirds are such intriging little parrots, aren't they?

Cheeky is the a very good lovie adjective. I think of the word plucky when I play with Kip. I tried to name him Maverick at first, because he was so independent, but he did not like it -- maybe because "Kip" sounds more like his chirp language?

She'll start to gain a lot of air as she molts. Today, while I put on my shoes, Kip lept off of the couch and out two feet onto my Congo Grey's cage. Luckily, Xavier is a sweet bird, so he just backed away.

Don't you love when they crawl into your sleeve? I think that lovebirds feel like silky little mice, because of their small, fine feathers. I like to cup one hand over Kip's whole body and let him crawl into the cave of my palm. As he pushes his way through, I place my other hand right where his forehead will emerge and keep repeating that step, and he bulldozes all over my shirt for minutes at a time. He really enjoys that game. Maybe you could play it with Marisol.

Why don't you start a thread in the toys and recipes forum asking for other Tailfeathers' pictures and descriptions of their own play areas? Many people make their own from safe parts that they learn to find around the house. Lisa (Peachee) is one member who comes to mind. She made a very nice one for Loki.

Im sad to say that my step-dad stole the camera today. But it wasnt charged, you would only get like one pic so it was okay. I will get pictures for sure on spring break (next week). Today she crawled up my capri pants. What a cheeky bugger. She is so affectionate. She is really starting to use her beak to communicate (which i am discouraging). She loves her play-gym and LOVES to be cuddled. She is settling in nicely, thanks. I just put her to bed. Thanks sree, she is a cutie. A monstrous cutie, as most lovies are. I cant wait to get to training her. She now knows how to hop onto my finger, on command! She is very smart. I was playing with her on my bed earlier and i put her down while i mixed her pablum together. Then she RAN (a waddle run) right over to me, hoped on my legs (which were crossed), grabbed onto my shirt with her beak, then pulled herself onto my shoulder with her beak and down into my shirt. She is fast too. I will put her on the play gym, then look down at my shirt and see this lump on my chest, that moves. I am so happy to have her! Also, her way of getting out of my shirt is coming out of my armpit (well my sleeve, but its by my armpit, its a short sleeve). Ask for some photos and i will try to get them. I also can give some pictures of her cage...the next post...because it might take me awhile to upload them. Also JJ is making tremendous progress in his taming. He comes on our fingers and on our shoulders (which he is obsessed with!) and in our hair (unfortunately makes a bird nest out of it...hard too get out!) We have been stick training him, its working very nicely. I cant wait to share the photos. See y'all later!!!

    Re: Home at last!!! (pics)

How exciting with a new addition! Marisol looks adorable! Erica (Roscoe's Mom) sent me a PM to help you out with a playgym idea. I made one for about $25 minus the toys I ended up hanging on it.

I just screwed a 2x4 piece of lumber (free at the lumber scrap yard) into the ceiling so that I only had two screws in the ceiling rather than one for every toy etc. I took eyelet screws and screwed them into the 2x4 to hang toys. Then, I went to the pet store and asked them if I could buy their display ladder that hangs their for-sale toys. They get these ladders for free each time they order a lot of toys from the company so they happily sold it to me for $15 or so. I hung this up on BOTH ends of the ladder to create a half-loop.

Another cheap idea is to hang a boing from the ceiling. Simple and easy.

This one is 4 dollar store dog toys (cut away the rubber piece that is sometimes on them) and 2 dollar store willow wreaths all attached with zip ties (dollar store too!) into my own version of an "atomic ball". Took about 10min to make and it's well loved.

For the little guys, I took one large willow wreath and tied it to the ceiling with jute rope. Attach toys and VOILA! Gym. For like $5. They don't know.

A cheap floor gym. A x-mas tree holder and some tree branches from outside (untreated with any pesticides, away from major highways).

Hope that gives you some inspiration!

Well yes, but she still likes to eat her mix. She is being such a brat today. She couldnt stop biting me. i had to put her in her cage early. all she would do was run after me and when i tried to keep her on my finger, she would just try to fly on my shoulder, if i tried to remove her she would just bite me. Also you guys know when a bird is trying to get up on your hand, it will use its beak to help itself up. Marisol BITES me HARD to get up. She's only 2 and 1/2 months. I really dont know what to do. I tried the "earthquake" idea, but she kept biting to re-balance herself!!!! Also i've tried the "time-out" idea, she will just run or fly back to where i am. And when i give up, she goes back in her cage. Then she looks all satisfied with herself. She was so cuddly and sweet when she was at Monique's house, now she just bites. I cant stand this, did i teach her to bite? Should i discourage her from being on my shoulder or in my shirt since the biting? Since shes so young, she still probably doesnt know the strength of her own beak...but i dont know. Also i have tried saying NO very firmly. That didnt work either. She has turned into a pest. Maybe its lack of food or sleep. Monique noticed that she hadnt been eating her Harrison's. And she hasnt ate veggies or fruit either, she just refuses. Tomorow morning, she will be hungriest. So i will feed her veggies then. Also she has been getting 12 hours of sleep everyday, at the least! I am at a loss for words. I wont be able to establish a good connection with this TAME bird if she continues to bite. Can someone please help me...i cant do this anymore!!!

You haven't taught her to bite. You are right that she is a young bird who does not yet fully understand the power of her own beak, and I know that it hurts like the dickens because the tip is so sharp, but there is a future with your lovely birdie. Don't get stressed. You're a new parent, and Marisol will learn whatever you teach her, as long as she knows that your love is her reward.

Being a new parent is frustrating, I know. Kip bites all the time. It's part of the way he communicates with me. I'm learning to deal with it in its less extreme forms, like innocent gnawing. Many of our parrots do that all the time, especially on the fingers and neck. Earthquake and other means of correction work after consistent use. Right now, she's biting as a reaction to a disturbance that she doesn't know the cause of. After a while she'll learn that it happens when she bites. You can also use diversions, like covering her head with your palm when she starts biting and making an amusing sound.

One way that you can start establishing your role as an authority is to introduce her to tricks, like "shake-shake" with one foot, or tickling. Welcome to parenthood! She'll fluster you, but you'll be prouder of her every day. She will learn to listen to you because she admires you.

    Re: Home at last!!! (pics)

Yes they do. Ive started to take her out in different rooms. So far she has been in the bathroom, my room (her cage is in there...thats mainly where she stays), and in my sisters room where the computer is. In fact, she is sitting on my shoulder in my sisters room as i write. Im so excited to have her. Its almost been a full week. I think i might take her for a trip to our local bird store (which the bird hospital is situated behind!) There she could pick out her own toys. I think that she would enjoy that visit. Also the owner of the store, is hoping that i will bring her by sometime soon.

Has anybody bought a shower perch? I bought one, however, it doesn't seem to stick (the suction cups). What do you all think of it? (if you have it of course!) My bird also isn't very curious in new surroundings... is that weird? She will look around and everything but she doesnt seem to interested in anything.

Also i need a few opinions about taking her down on the sofa to watch movies and such. I have two small dogs and im wondering how they would get along. Should i wait until she's older or what? I desperately want her to feel like a part of the family!

Thanks. And if any of you guys would like to see pictures just ask.
