    Everyone with homemade PVC gyms

Can you please post pictures of your gyms, and how you made them? I'm thinking of making a couple of bird gyms since storebought gyms are sooo expensive, and I need ideas.

Oops, I forgot to put this in the "homemade toys" folder. Mods, please move it for me, sorry!

This is mine. I went for the PVC play gym. I have tons more toys on it now. Though i may redesign it sometime soon to take up less footprint in my apartment

I wrapped them in jute twine...takes a while until you get into the rhythm of it.

I didn't use anything to make the string stay on. What I did was put about 1-2 inches of the twine along the pvc...then I wrapped over it real tight so it held itself in place(this was the hard part)...then when I got to the other end I just tied it...for the most part it stays pretty well.

Re: Everyone with homemade PVC gyms

Here is my gym. If you like it, I have detailed instructions as I documented every step for the parrot club newsletter I write.

    The skeleton of the gym:

The decorated gym (I used Vet Wrap but that did not work so I've replaced it with jute twine as well)

One more thing, no matter which gym inspires you, if you're doing PVC, get this (I got mine at Rona if those are around where you are):

Just bring the photo in to a home depot type place and they should know what it is. Without it, it'll be hard to cut it into the necessary pieces.

that looks like a copper tubing cutter, they also make Snip like cutters expecially for pvc. It's kinda like a small hand held ratchet shear/snip.

I don't think it's strong enough to cut copper tubing... It took a lot of elbow grease to even cut thin PVC piping. Either way, whatever it is, it's a necessity!

Re: Everyone with homemade PVC gyms

Lisa is that a food/water dish I see attached to your playgym?
I made a play tree for Raven and Yogi, and attached a plastic food dish but it looks like you have one of those round ones that has a wingnut with washers to attach.

I have to make something like yours so I can incorporate my boing I bought Sunday afternoon.

Was it expensive to make that gym? Would like the directions please

p.s was great to finally meet you and Loki at the parrot club meeting Sunday. Was so funny when Loki took the short cut to landing on my head, instead of your arm lol

also note that if your making this for budgies and want something smaller in diameter, try CPVC it's just like pvc just thinner which makes it smaller in diameter, Example....1/2in pvc is 3/4in outside diameter...1/2in cpvc is alot closer in diameter because it's thinner pipe. Just a thought.

Yes, there is both a food and water dish; there are two but in that photo, you can only see one. I just drilled a hole through the PVC pipe and stuck the screw threw the hole and threaded the wingnut on the other side.

The whole gym was about $75 total but I didn't measure properly so it probably could have been cheaper. It is much bigger than I had anticipated it to be. That being said, at the cost of pre-fab gyms and the manzanita trees, it felt like a bargain! And it only took me less than 2 hours to get the whole thing done which was great.

Loki is SUCH a head landing bird. She doesn't seem to realize that not EVERYONE enjoys having a bird fly at their head. It really freaks my house guests out when she does that. Oh well.
