Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

no, not on budgies, but i didn't get two of my tiels de-wormed (just in case they had something). i can't tell you first hand how well it works but they use it alot were i work (the humane society) and it seems to do the trick. i do have to warn you though that if it's not diluted properly or if too much is administered it can cause SERIOUS neurological problems. one of the new vet techs there over dosed a snake and the poor thing was compleltly paralized for a week. it caused some serious damage because the blood coagulated inside of his body because he couldn't move. he's still alive (don't know why they haven't put the poor thing down yet) but it's 'tail' is starting to fall off (still can't move that part of it's body).

be careful and make sure you go to a vet that knows what its doing.

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

Ferin thanks for your answer. How do you use the ivermectin at the humane society?
do they put 1 cc in 1/4 gallon of water and use it as a drink?
I'm trying to decide what to do, as my budgie has scaly face but I'm unable to locate an avian vet here...
I have visited several regular vets and they only prescribed ivermectin cream in the lesion, but they really weren't sure on the appropiate treatment...
    thanks

I always use ivermectin for scaly face, but not the injectible stuff, or the drinking water method. It's used like dog flea treatment is, you put one drop of it on the back of the birds neck, and repeat a fortnight later. Clears it up super fast!

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

This is common practice with all exhibition budgie people. I dose all 200 of my show budgies once a year. Some of my birds are worth $200 each, I wouldn’t do this if it wasn’t safe if properly done. I use the injectable Ivermectin BUT YOU DO NOT inject it. You must use a tuberculin syringe and needle and drop one drop of medication by mouth or on the skin at the back of the neck. The injectable Ivermectin is NOT water soluble, it will mix like oil and water. This information is from Dr. Dustin Clark, head avian vet at the University of Arkansas vet school.

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

Hey Kerry, thank you very much for such valuable information. I have the injectable ivermectin, it has 1 gram of ivermectin for every 100 ml of solution.
So one has to drop one drop of ivermectine on the skin of the back of the neck with the siringe? Do you blow the feathers so the medicine falls on the skin?
do you have to weigh the budgie?
How old budgies should be to be treated that way?
    many thanks for you answer.

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

How funny, I was just fixing to copy and paste this message to you on the Budgie Talk site. I don't know what Iverfull is, have never used it. The Ivermectin I use is the same kind one used for cattle and horses, I buy it at my local large animal feed store. The tuberculin syringe is what diabetics use, the most it will hold is 1CC. I think that is what is in your pic. For me it really is easier to deliver the medication one drop in the mouth. I medicate adult birds and chicks that are 6 months old. If they come down with scaly mites I will medicate them earlier, but have never had that problem....yet.

If you hold the bird properly you will not get bitten. The only pressure I have on this bird is at his jaws. I can hold his feet back with my pinky finger if I need to.

    Hope this helps.

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

    Hey Kerry,
I think the Ivermectine that I found should be the same as you have, because it is for sheep, goat, pigs. If you can check for me that the amount of medicine is the same as what I have, I would be extremely happy. This is 1 gr of ivermectin in every 100 ml.

Also, my budgies are really tiny. I have seen English budgies and they are about double the size of mine. I wonder if your show birds are the size of English budgies or smaller, or how much they weight.

I appreciate very much your help
    regards

    caballoazul,

If you too spooked to use the medication you can always go back to baby oil and a Q-tip. Just cover the affected areas. It takes longer to get rid of the mites, but will work. I use to use that 30 years ago on my "American" pet budgies. You have to put it on every day.

Re: ivermectin treatment for scaly face

my biggest problem is knowing what pressure to apply. and always airing on side of not wanting to squish their little head they get to poke holes in me

that syringe... I've had them with a silver "needle" tip and without. without the tip it is hard, I don't get it.

my last dosage lately the !@#!@#!@ gave me a completely different syringe.

    good luck.

Kerry,no I would rather use the ivermectin, it would be almost impossible for me to grab them everyday, and they would be very stressed. I just want to be very sure what I'm doing!
I believe they weigh about 25 grams, but I'll check and get back to you all guys
    thanks!
