    Thumbs up Cross your fingers

I am not going to work outside the home anymore!

So I decided that I will have time to devote to birds.

I just finished filling out a 4 page adoption application from a local rescue/adoption center here in Georgia. It was very thorough and had excellent questions on it such as:

Do we have permission to contact your vet for references?

How do you plan to train your parrot?

Are you aware that hookbills have a normal urge to chew wood, buttons, jewelry, furniture, molding and any other thing that may get in the way of their potentially destructive beaks?

All parrots have the capability of talking, but not all will talk. Some birds will scream in loud pitches, continuously. They may just need attention, food, or love. They may also have behavioral habbits that could be hard to break. How would you handle these situations?

What are some of the foods toxic to birds?

What is the proper cage size for each bird?

What materials are safe for perches?

    And it just goes on.

Please pray that this is one of those groups that really will adopt out their birds to good, loving homes and not one of those that say they will, but God himself couldn't meet their requirements.

Good luck I hope you get accepted. Those questions are really great.Anyone who can't answer or handle any of those things should NOT rescue birds.

Here are some more of their questions:

Describe signs of illness in a bird.

Certain materials used as cage liners could kill a bird. List safe cage liners.

Vitamin deficiencies can be hazardous to your bird's health. It is important to provide a variety of foods. What foods would you feed to an exoctic bird?

Why is it necessary to have different diameter perches?

How would you quarantine your bird?

List some toxic household cleaners and plants.

Can you describe some of the dangers that a bird might be exposed to in any household?

If I ever decided to breed birds (which I won't because I think there are too many who already need homes, and because being responsible for a newborn bird scares me to death because they are sooooo tiny and delicate) I would make an application similar to this one before I sold any bird.

    Re: Cross your fingers

Thing is....any idiot with a computer can answer these questions. I understand that they have to have a "procedure" but it is kind of like giving credit based on a credit score alone. I hope they look at the person and the situation, in which case, Aerrica, you should have no problem. I posted a while back about being rejected by a rescue group based on the fact that I already have birds (but the resuce required prior bird experience so how does one get experience without owning birds?????) and dogs. Good luck and I hope everything works out.
