Talking Tips!
:b lob4: Hi I have some questions on how to make a bird talk. Well how exactly do you do it? Do you just sit in a quiet place and repeat the word over and over? Will they know what it means once they learn it? How many words are they usually known to learn? How do you teach them sentences? Oh and if you have some voices from your or a bird like on a website...thanks!

Here is what we did
It doesn't have to be a quiet place to teach your budgie to talk. It is saying the phase over and over and over.
One of our budgies doesn't talk and one does. He know how to come when asked by saying "come here." He knows what a kiss is and says "give mama kiss." He knows how to say "good boy" as we say it to him all the time. When he comes when called we wll say "Hi baby". He says it back to us. He now makes up his own sentences. He'll say "Give baby kiss" or "Mama's good boy" because he knows all three of those words. Even though we have never said those three words together. Have your bird with you at all times and talk, talk and talk to him.

Hey there! Thanks for your question!
I hope this helps you a bit...
Well how exactly do you do it?
Teaching your bird to talk is another type of taming. There are many ways to teach your bird to talk. It is a long-term matter, so you can't expect your bird to talk in a week or so.
Do you just sit in a quiet place and repeat the word over and over?
How do you teach them sentences?
Actually, you don't need to be in a quiet place. Repetative talk is really best thing though. Be extrememly social with your bird and start with simple simple words or 2 word phrases.
After actually getting them to talk a word or so, you can them start on sentences as dear sgosh's Sputty would say :"oh god, it hurts to disappiont a budgie"
It is a patience thing so just keep at it and repeat words and simple phrases to start with. Another helpful key is to record your self repetatively on a recorder and play it whike your out. Be sure to have a calm tone when you recorder your self; to have a soft and reassuring voice so that it is both comforting and clear to your bird.
Will they know what it means once they learn it?
Unless your are physically teaching them, continually shwoing them the tihings your talking about I doubt it. But birds are incredibly smart so you never know....
How many words are they usually known to learn?
Once you've taught your bird to talk their vocabulary will expand hugely! half the stuff they say may never of come from YOUR mouth! A starter talker would probably have a few words and sentences down pat, but once they learn, there an unstoppable force! :haha
Oh and if you have some voices from your or a bird like on a website...thanks!
You should talk to sgosh, Sputty is the famous talker around here! He has phrases crazy beyond your mind! There are lots of links im sure you could get alot out of it!
Im sure you'll do great! Good luck! Just remember patience and repetativeness!

Please do be aware, though, that all birds may not talk- even when looking at breeds known for talking, breeders will tell you that all don't talk!!!

Re: Here is what we did
Yes, not all birds talk. Mine surprised me one day by saying a phrase that I would greet him every day with, not even trying to teach him and he picked it up on his own. Each bird is different. Have fun!
