avian vet/animal vet costs?
how much does a "healthy bird" check-up cost?
& how often should you take your bird 2 the vet, even if he's not sick or wounded?

Re: avian vet/animal vet costs?
My healthy bird check up was about $350. My vet does a lot of blood work and found some minor intestinal infection so I also needed to pay for the medication. I also live in CA and everything is expensive here! You can probably get one elsewhere for less.
Once a year is a good frequency for checkups. If you are not comfortable clipping wings (if you decide to clip them) or claws you need to go more often. Not all 'tiels need claws clipped, mine don't. I have some cement perches and that seems to keep the claws less sharp. I do clip wings and can do it by myself.

Mine had its claws clipped, was weighed and she gve him a general 'feel' / look over. It only cost me 20 pounds. So I was happy

Re: avian vet/animal vet costs?
it really depends on what vet clinic you go to. it also depends on how much of a "check-up" you want. if your looking to get a blood test done (looking for any signs of infection etc..) then it will definetly cost more then just a weigh and a quick look over.

My birdy check ups for my meyers and senegal's cost around $80 each. I paid around $250 for initial exams/blood workups when I first got them.

I believe I have paid around $75. A little more for the first round since the vet suggested further blood work for different things.

Depends what a "well-bird" check up means to you. I'd say that here you would expect the vet to observe, weigh, listen to breathing and maybe a fecal smear as well as talking to you about what the birds general health is like. That costs approx $60-$80 here. I don't take my birds in routinely, but first sign of illness and they're booked in ASAP.

Re: avian vet/animal vet costs?
It depends a lot on where you go. But here's our situation in Bloomington, Indiana:
Our current vet charges a flat visit rate of $60 or $70. He weighs them, checks throat and ears, checks vital signs, etc. He also likes to run a blood test to check white blood cell levels, which costs a little bit more (I don't recall how much). We get wing clips and nail clips thrown in, which is very nice. So for us it $100 or less, unless there is a reason to run tests.

Re: avian vet/animal vet costs?
I paid $200.00 at one practice, $300.00 at another.
To be honest, while BOTH vets were thorough and on the list w/ aav.org, the second vet ($300.00) spent nearly an hour speaking with me. That's not to say that the other vet at the other practice wasn't as good, knowledgeable, etc. I just clicked with the second guy.
Keep in mind that these were both initial, well-bird exams with full blood work and gram stains.
