    Foot problem/injury

Our lovie, Max has developed a problem with his right foot. We had to board him for a few days and when my husband brought him home yesterday, I think that he somehow got his foot pinched on the trip home. The problem is with the big toe on his right foot. He favors the foot by holding it close to his body and when he does grasp his perch, he keeps the toe stretched out. He will move about his cage to eat and drink, but at a much slower pace than usual. Max is not hand tamed so I've not been able to hold him to look at the toe, but I don't see any broken skin and the toe/foot doesn't seem to be swollen. Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on this problem. There isn't an avian vet close to me or I would have already taken him in this morning.

    Thanks!

    Jacque

I am sorry to hear about Max, I dont have any advise but I do hope he feels better soon. Its common for them to hold a hurt foot up like you say, mine gets a nail snipped low to give blood at the vets and will keep it up for days cuz' it hurts. I wonder if he broke his toe, poor Max Have you tried to call the vets in your area to see if they treat birds, my avian vet has a couple of vets in her office who are real good with birds but are not specialists in them but I trust them to treat my bird. Since it is his foot or toe it seems it would be easier to treat then something on the inside... just a thought.

If you can calmly corner him and scoop him up in a towel, that will be best. It may upset him some, but a calm voice does a lot to soothe, and under the circumstances I am sure he will forgive you.

Do it in a closed room in case he wriggles free. Make sure you hold him securely but gently.

You can keep him from biting you by using the towel to seperate his head from your hand, as long as you make sure that his face isn't covered and his airway is open. Have a little rubbing alcohol and some sterile cotton balls ready, in case you do find an open injury. Also look for evidence of breakage (awkward angles).

If there is none, you may be able to help him feel better by keeping him in a smaller cage on a thin bed of carefresh, with a heating pad set on low underneath. If the problem is bruising or muscle soreness, the heat will ease some of the symptoms. I bet he would thank you for it if he could

    Re: Foot problem/injury

The good news is that Max is doing better today. He is much more active and is using his foot more than yesterday. He is actually hopping from perch to food cup to toy and around his cage and closing his foot around the perches.

I have not held him but he will hold his foot up where I can see it and I don't see any open wounds, so I think that it must be a muscle problem. While his activity level is not quite back to normal, his personality is back to his usual cute self.

    Thanks for the advice.

    Have a good holiday weekend!

Thanks for letting us know Max is doing better today, that is GREAT news. I was hoping it was just a sore muscle and it sure sounds like it might of been. It takes time, with boomer and his toe nail clip short he will hold it up for 4 or 5 days, especially when he is tired. If his personality is back that is good, he has to be feeling better then

You have a good weekend too!

    Re: Foot problem/injury

Max is back to his usual self. The foot is still a tiny bit swollen, but it hasn't stopped him from crawling upside down across the top of his cage!

Thanks for all of the advice.

Don't worry, I'm not going to leave Tailfeathers - I usually just read the threads without signing in or posting replys. I believe that Max is a healthy, happy bird because of all I have learned from everyone on this list. I also LOVE the baby pictures.

    Re: Foot problem/injury

I love all the babies here as well, seems we have lots of baby lovies on here lately as well so it gives us eye candy as well as good advice on our birds.

I am happy Max is doing good now, it is so scary when something goes wrong but makes you cherish them just a bit more after the scare is away. Give him a little scritch for me... by the way do you have any Max pictures for us, we even like grown up lovie pictures here
