Is it wrong to want a lutino cockatiel?

I haven't got my 'tiel yet, but soon! I'd like to get a nice yellow lutino male but wondered if that's a good idea. My thoughts are that lutinos are bred for the albinism defect and I wonder if I should support this kind of thing? Am I being too "deep" here? After all we have a diluted budgie and another that is almost white.

    Thoughts?

I don't think it's wrong to want a particular mutation, I had a lutino tiel myself and really didn't want to buy a different colour. I think a lot of people have a preference for a certain colour when it comes to buying a parrot of any type and I really don't see anything not right about it.

Just get what you want is my opinion. Honestly if a certain mutation really appeals to you then it's better for you to be happy. Lutinos are an established mutation and if you can get one from a reputable breeder you'll find you'll have a really good bird. Mutations happen in the wild too.

Lutino is a Sex Linked Mutation, and is unrelated to albinism. In fact, as far as I know there is NO ALBINO COCKATIEL. There are pure white cockatiels, but those are not albinos, those are WhiteFace-Lutino Cockatiels.

The only problem with Lutino Cockatiels is the bald spot behind their crest, this is the result of generation of inbreeding, but generally speaking Lutino are as good as any other cockatiel even with their bald spot so, enjoy your Lutino Cockatiel and good luck.

ya, i agree with javier. Lutino's AREN"t albino's (nor are white faced tiels for that matter). as Javier was explaining it's a sex-linked mutation. i applaud you for not wanting to support some of the inhumane things ppl do to animals to get something they want from them. thats a great attitude and i hope that you continue to think that way.

the only problems i've ever heard partaining to lutino's are the bald spot and some can have hemophilia (a blood disease that prevents the blood from clotting. can be VERY dangerous and usually whoever/whatever has it dies from complications from it. *i.e--internal bleeding*.

i'd say get whatever tiel you have the strongest connection with. don't pick one just becasue of it's color, get one with the personailty you like and who makes you feel "right" when your around him/her. good luck!

i think you should get the kind you want there is a possibility that there has been a albino tiel befor(i just saw an albino squril a day ago so i think it can happen to anything) but most really arnt and its better for you to get a tiel you love then one you only got because its the right thing but i do respect that you care about animals everyone should be like that
