Question Green Cheek Conure Food HELP!!

Hi everyone, I was just wondering for those of you who own green cheek conures what is the best food to feed? I am doing as much research as I can before I get mine in Auguest ( ) and I just wanted to know what you recommend! I also wanted to know if you could tell me what size the "bags" come in and the price!

    thanks

Re: Green Cheek Conure Food HELP!!

hi there congrats on your GCC, they are so cute!
mine eats bananas, raspberries, apples, and persimmons.
cooked potatoes, raw kale, cooked peas, carrots and broccolis (steamed) mine likes crunchy veggies, nothing soft, cherry tomatoes and sweet potatoes also cooked.
    sunflower very often, almonds, walnuts,
brown rice and egg noodles for protein, scramble eggs with no salt or pouched eggs too.

oatmeal flakes, cheerios, Harrisons adult coarse, not the high potency since they dont need much protein, Conures need a diet high in fat, because they are a fast metabolish and they are sooo hyper and playful so they need fat to burn, feed moslty omega 3 foods, salmon is good (cooked) they need vitamin K, A, C
and low in protein (i dont know why but i saw in a book)
    hope it helped

u need to be persistent sometimes, it may take a while until a bird realizes that what you are giving him is good. have u tried eating with him? try that, they like to share with you!

Re: Green Cheek Conure Food HELP!!

Since it's kind of late and it's been a long day for me...here are some quotes from previous posts that I have responded to.

"*Food wise. I like feeding as organic as possible. For pellets I feed Harrison's, which is a bit pricey, but is totaly worth it. http://www.harrisonsbirdfoods.com/ I see mood changes, brighter colors, less waste. If you don't feel the need to be spending that much, then a good food from petsmart would be some Zupreem. My birds like the Cockatiel size, and again, i see less waste. I try not to feed seeds from petsmart (8in1, Kaytee etxc) because they add some preservatives that I feel shouldn't be going inot my birds. For seeds I like to feed goldenfeast http://www.goldenfeast.net/ and they have a HUGE variety. I usually get the goldenfeast and harrison's from a New Jersey store called http://www.mybirdstore.com/
I also cook various foods such as birdie breads, I sprout seeds, I give baby food in different forms, fresh/frozen veggies, table scraps, cookable foods such as beak appetite and some of my own mixes.''

"Here is what I think about seeds: Seeds are okay as long as it in a complete AND balanced diet. My girls get their veggies, fruits, babyfoods, rice mixes, pellets and seeds. I get Goldenfeast, and they have a ton of variety on which sorts of mixes...and it's all organic with no sprays or preservatives. I also give about a teaspoon a day or so in the morning as a way of saying good bye, love you, and be good. It keeps them destracted while I am leaving and they seem satesfied"

Anyways...in conclusion....I really like what Harrison's has done for the birds. It might be a bit more expensive (5 lbs. for 33.00 dollars with shipping) but I love it. You will also like ZUpreem's foods. Try staying away from Kaytee and pretty bird because they have all sorts of strange things in them. In general...try to stay away from petsmart and petco. I get a few things there, but I mainly shop at www.drfostersmith.com www.bird.com www.theperch.net and www.mybirdstore.com
    Yours Truely, Emily

Re: Green Cheek Conure Food HELP!!

The Green-Cheeked conure will need a good deal of specific care to keep it happy and healthy-birds like these are easy to sustain but take some effort to keep properly. You will want to sell your Greencheeked customer a basic birdcare book, and perhaps add on a general conure book, as well. Your customer will not be able to find a book specifically on the Green-Cheeked.

Merlin loves Zupreem Natural and Hagen Tropican Lifetime Granules. Both are excellent pellets.
Also a good seed mix is a nice treat once or twice a week. And lots of fresh or frozen(steamed) veggies!
