    Best food for parrotlets?

Anyone have any recommendations for the best food (I'm guessing pellets, correct?) for parrotlets?

    Thanks in advance!

In my parrotlet handbook, its stated that parrotlets need seed in theyre diet. I think maybe a comboe will work. Not sure thoug.

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

Now that I am a new "parrotlet mommy" I will be eagerly watching this thread.

I grabbed a package of "parrot food - small" off the shelf at the pet store when I picked up my pair last night, and asked the girl if that is what they'd been feeding them. She told me that no, even the "small" parrot food might be too big for them. She pointed me to some sort of "Tropicana cockatiel and lovebird" mixture, that she says they'd been using to feed them. Sorry, I'm not at home, so don't have exact details.

I was actually going to ask what all the parrotlet owners are feeding their babies as a staple.

I know they need fruits and veggies on top of their staple. And I also read something about hard boiled eggs twice a week?

    Looking forward to the responses!

i feed mine the 'gourmet' small hookbill food - it has bits of everything. plus i put pellets in with it (she doesn't seem keen on those), plus i have some regular seed in there too.

I feed mine budgeriar food. As that is what my breeder had used. She also gets a few millet branches and some eggfood. I cant feed here any fruits now, cause she is on medisine given throug the water, so she cant have any watery fruits until she is finished the yeast/fungis cure. i will also try some boiled, unsalted rice when she can have normal water again.

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

You can feed them a Cockatiel seed mix but with LITTLE to NO sunflower seeds. he hookbill mix is good too. My breeder weans his off on Kaytee Exact Rainbow pellets ( i think is a cockatiel mix as well) And they love their bean mix, brown rice, Beak Apetite, Veggies, Fruits, Birdie Bread, and Millet. I do know that Parrotlets love chilli peppers!! I hope this helps!!

I hear a lot of people using Zupreem in general. But I am not sure for specifically P'lets. Maybe someone will come along and help you answer this.

From the research I've done, pellets aren't the best thing for mutation parrotlets:

    http://www.internationalparrotletsoc...rg/pellet.html

FWIW: As far as pellets go, my first choice is Harrion's, which are all natural and organic. TOP (Totally Organic Pellets) is another popular brand of natural, organic pellets. Roudybush is another brand that I personally feel is nutrionally sound.

    Great article.. thanks for posting.

He (asssuming it is a he) feeds 70% fresh foods and 30% seeds.

What are good brands of seeds then?

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

Parrotlets have a very high metabolism. Mine get a good quality cockatiel mix with no sunflower seed and then I add black oil sunflower sedds to it when I feed. They need a higher fat content than most other birds. I also give lots of fresh vegies, fruits, beans, brown rice. They also need a lot of calcium so be sure you give a cuttle bone. I have mutations and normal green so I don't feed pellets, just make sure they have a healthy balanced diet.

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

I keep hearing "no sunflower seeds" for parrotlets. To save me some time (I mean, I could do a google search probably), can somebody tell me why sunflower seeds are not recommended for parrotlets? I thought this was a favorite seed of the bigger parrots. Is it because their beaks aren't as strong to crack them open or is there some other reason? Thanks!

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

I was at the avian vet today, and he was not pleased that I used budgie mix, he said only pellets of good quality is good enough for your bird. I tried to tell him that Ive read in a book that they need seed, he said, that was a bad book oh, well. lol

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

my girl's mixture has sunflower seeds in it (not an abundance) - and she eats those and the other things in the mix - she in not dependent on the sunflower seeds. i also have budgie seed i have in another bowl for her. i sprinkle pellets and/or zupreem on top of the food to try and get her to eat that stuff - she has no interest. she has zero interest in trying anything new - except maybe lettuce - no fruit, nothing (man, she sounds like my son). at that point, considering she was near death when i 'saved' her, i think any food is better than none. she seems to be a creature of habit, and really does not accept change well.

I believe one reason why Sunflower seeds should hardly be fed to P'lets is because they are really high in fat and too many would be bad for their health. They can cause fatty liver disease.

    Re: Best food for parrotlets?

If the Parrotlet doesn't only eat fatty seed I think they are fine. High metabolism.

Chipper eats very little seed or pellet. She loves her strawberries, blackberries, carrots, broc, greens, celery, Beak Appetit, birdie breads, rice, pasta, beans etc. A wide variety of fresh food is great.

A quality cockatiel seed with little to no sunflower seed, the black oil sunflower are healthier. The black oil has the good fat. Still, take care not to overfeed. Ounce for ounce, if you were to compare a p'let to say a macaw, the p'let will require more food, higher calorie intake than the macaw. Always offer fresh veggies, fruits, beans, sprouts. Even if they refuse to eat it, keep offering it they will usually end up trying it. For a normal green you can also feed pellets.

ONLY pellets or both pellets and seeds? I keep hearing conflicting things about pellets. I'd rather feed only pellets (and fresh foods) if I can.

Pellets and fresh fruits and veggies are fine for your baby. Is the breeder weaning her onto the pellets or seed? If they wean her onto the pellets it will be much easier for you. If they are not maybe you can ask them to? I don't feed pellets because I have greens and color mutations. Good luck with your baby!
