Doesn't like to have cage covered

Our new budgie does not like to have its cage covered. As soon as it's covered, you can hear all sorts of commotion as he's climbing up and down the bars and then dropping to the bottom. I thought covering the cage was supposed to calm them down!?

    ....

Quite alot of birds think nighttime is play time but when he gets tired he'll stop.

If he flutters and makes horrible sqauks and is in fear then he may be scared of dark so get a nightlght.

And/or he what colour is the blanket i read that birds really hate the colour black and i think red.

And/or he may hate all blankets in general so try covering half the cage so he has a choice.

Are you covering the cage all the way? If so, try just covering a portion of it. Your bird should be able to see out at least one side. I think of the cage covering as more of a ritual that tells my bird it's time for bed. Sometimes he'll stay awake and play with his toys if the light is on so I try to turn the light off at the same time every night (around 9pm) in addition to covering his cage.

z My budgie doesn't like having her cage covered. So I don't cover it. The room is dark enough and she sleeps when she wants to. She has been like this for two years and is ok with out a cover.

Cage covers aren't totally necessary unless there's some sort of behavior problem -- and then at the direction of an avian vet or behaviorist.

This is one of the things the vet I took Casper to today mentioned -- and it's actually good to leave part uncovered so he can see out if something is scaring him.
