    Budgie egg binding?

Hello all! Long time no see.

First of all, I know I'm going to get lectures for not taking my budgie to the vet. We just used our vet savings fund (a whole $500) and we're broke otherwise.

My favorite budgie, Limone, seems to be ill. But she doesn't act sick at all... she sings and isn't fluffed up, eats and drinks fine. She doesn't move around as much because I think she is trying to lay an egg. Her abdomen is swollen just above her vent. It's been this way for about four days now. She is not in any obvious distress, like I said. Is there a possibility she could still lay it?

I have her in a hospital cage with a heating pad (which she doesn't need yet as she pants if I turn it on) and easy access to food and water.

I've given her an oral calcium plus D3 supplement in addition to her regular food, which includes a little seed, broccoli, sprouts, and Zupreem budgie pellets. Is there anything else I can do besides wait?

That is Limone. She is such a sweetheart. It's killing me that I can't take her to the vet right now.

Have you tried rubbing mineral oil around the vent? Soaking her bottom in warm water?
Love me when I least deserve it, that's when I really need it.

    Re: Budgie egg binding?

I did put some mineral oil on her vent, but I didn't soak her butt in warm water because I was afraid it would stress her out. I don't want to accidentally break the egg inside her and cause further problems.

I did take a closer look at her this evening, and the area seems cushy... like it's round as if an egg were there, but it's smaller than it was and it's softer than it was before. It was never hard to begin with.

Has anyone had a budgie with these kinds of symptoms?

I haven't seen those symptoms.... Maybe try putting her in a small room with a humidifier or in the bathroom with a hot shower running to help with the egg, if that is the problem. Keep us posted!

    Re: Budgie egg binding?

She's not any better or worse today. This is frustrating. If she's eggbound, wouldn't she have died by now or gotten an infection? I know there's still a possibility for infection, but everything else I've read says that the bird gets very sick within a couple days if the egg does not pass.

    I'm so confused.

Duh... I just had another thought.

I'm actually not sure Limone is a girl. Her cere never turned brown and crusty at any point in this process or ever. I'm now thinking my poor Limone has a tumor.

Has anyone had a tumor removed from their budgie? How much did it cost you?

Well, I thought I'd update. The bad news is I'm still having no luck finding a vet that will work out payments with me. :P There are only a couple avian vets in Indianapolis (at least ones I trust).

The good news is that she isn't any sicker and she's actually doing flappies as I speak. I'm very confused, but hopeful. It seems like she'll stay stable long enough for me to get some money together and get it checked out.

Hmm... interesting. Well, he's okay now, and after this week, I'm taking him in for a check up. The swelling has gone down and he's back to normal.... I wonder what in the heck it was.

These little birds of ours seem to make us worry and then all the sudden they are better. I hope your little limone will be fine and I do think a vet visit may be a good thing, especially if Limone never had a bump where he had one, how odd he is all better and the bump is now gone, I wonder what it was too??? Thank goodness it is gone.
