This is our pet Hahn's Macaw, Globo (Globito). This bird has major attitude! . . . He is a very precocious bird with an engaging and interactive personality! My husband, Dave, and I can handle Globo equally well, and he is friendly with several other people. He is an excellent talker with a large vocabulary and uses words and phrases appropriately . . . After his shower, Globo loves to cuddle in a towel while whispering his name. He usually calls himself "Globito". He can be a brat at times but loves to be held and cuddled.

The part that I italicized is eerily true! When Penelope is calm, like when I cuddle her, or after I have covered her up at night, she whispers "Oh, good Pello. Lello Lello. Good grrrll. Penelo-pe. Penelo-pe."

The information provided in this link is (verbatim) the same information provided in the Avalon link, and I liked this one better because the text was larger and the color scheme made it easier to read.

If I can find my camcorder, I'll take a little video of myself interacting with Penelope tomorrow evening, and then I'll tell you some more about her.

Ah, no video today. The camcorder is here somewhere, but I am busy-busy-busy . . . But I wouldn't let you hang! I took some Penelope pictures

Keep in mind, these pictures were taken within a ten minute span -- that's how active these birds can be, when they really get going.

Penelope wouldn't shut up, because I had food and she wanted it. So, here she is dabbing out every last molecule of my Country Berry Blend applesauce cup. Can you make out her upside-down head in there?

It was a long and thorough process. Several times she bit me and took the cup, convinced that I was withholding applesauce from her, but she couldn't hold it without me, so it fell to the floor and she squawked

This is an image of her right in the process of lifting her wing up and squealing: "Tickr-tickr". She loves tickles

Here is Penelope eating her favorite snack: a chunk of KIND brand organic fruit and nut bar. They are nothing but mixed nuts and golden raisins, bound in molasses. She and Roscoe each only need one bar a week between them, and they like them more than seeds.

When Penelope is done with hers, underneath her there is a pile of nut crumbs and uneaten golden raisins. She won't even try them.

She's standing on the portable "potty stand" that I made her. During TV time, she plays on it while I wait for her to go potty. Within days of getting it, she gnawed off part of the ladder. You're welcome, Penelope.

This is my favorite picture of Penelope. It captures her personality well. She's hanging from my finger and swinging. I must have taken twenty of these before one turned out without motion blur, and I almost never have that problem with this camera!

You even got me. I forgot that I had that back there when I read this. I wondered "Where?"

People just give me bird things! Someone very kind (but just an acquaintance) surprised me one day by making a special trip, from about 45 minutes away, so she could drop that off for me. I snuggled it and brought it home as a trophy. However, the misshapen anisodactyl feet disturb me . . . and the "hair" where the crest should be

I get those, too. When I got into lovebirds, I couldn't stop talking with my classmates about all of the new things I learned. Some of my classmates, but especially the older ones, got a little angry with me because I have a very easy time learning, and . . . well -- paying attention to boring things. So, even though I tutored them for free (which you would think they would appreciate), occasionally I would hear something like "Oh, what does she care what [the instructor] is saying. All she cares about are her stupid lovebirds."

    Re: Hahns Macaw Owners come!

Ed, Penelope was a darling today. She is calm and agreeable. She let me help break up some of her pinfeathers, which is generally a pet peeve of hers. She has not yelled today, aside from a couple of "Ewica's!!" when she heard me walk upstairs, away from her.

I think that the irritability of molting -- which is akin to dealing with a child who is teething, in many medium to large birds -- is subsiding. This is nice. Her mood is sweet and pleasant.

She is two years old. This is the age at which they begin to mature, so what is true of human babies is true of Hahnses: they go through terrible two's. When we tolerate it in stride, they become lovely adults :-)
