I just got a pair of cockatiels and they have been giving off alot of dander/dust from ther feathers and I have tried to bath them and this does not help either I heard there are sprays for controling this, how does it work and is it safe. IS there any other ways where you can remove all the dander

It's not possible, it's a natural part of cockatiels.

Re: How to stop your cockatiel dander?

Im sure every cockatiel owner around wishes there was a way to get rid of that stuff.. but its part of what you have to accept with a tiel..bathing daily will help cut down on it.. i notice a big difference..having air purifiers helps with it in the air.. and just vaccuming ..dusting.. everyday cleaning and i dont find it to be that big of a deal really I have grown accustomed to vaccuming and sweeping a few times a day.... i always tell topper he's making it snow.. maybe some tiels have a little more than others i have no clue.. now that i have two tiels maybe im going to notice a big big difference.. its just something everyone has to really really consider before getting cockatiels.. along with the good stuff comes the dander flying around i did really dislike it at first..i was like OMG thats alot of stuff.. honestly now i dont even notice..i just clean and its just something u get use to in a few months you'll see ..have a nice day

My only suggestion is bathing them..
I know, I have three tiels, it gets crazy during the day I end up wanting just to vacuum a little bit and end up cleaning the whole area because of my OCD. ;p

Cockatiels are among the most "dusty" birds; you can cut down on it a little if you can convince them to bathe, but nothing cuts it down by much.

Re: How to stop your cockatiel dander?

I was just thinking today about how messy they are! My 2 are moulting, so seed, feathers and dust are everywhere! Then they have pulled the leaves off a hawthorne stick, shredded and thrown around the lettuce, cucumber and as I speak Tom is working on the celery! What a mess!
I must admit that I enjoy cleaning out their cage and area to make it all nice for them, and changing something around to make life interesting. They always watch me very carefully to see what I am doing, while I tell them off for the mess! I have just vacumed and Tom has run throught the seed bowl on top of the cage..... guess where the seed is!
The dust is a problem for our visitors, as we have some who are asthmatic, so right now I have the air purifier on as we have friends coming tonight.
I love it when Pete collects dust to preen my nose or ears or chin!

I thought mine was messy until we bird sat my dads african grey. OMG!

The front room is covered in seed (he tends to through it around a bit) and the dust is SOOOOOO much more than little Ollie!!

Re: How to stop your cockatiel dander?

I could be completely wrong, but I truly don't think it is possible to get rid of any birds feather dust or dander. My birds like to hang out on my desk while I am on the computer esp. the Tiels and today I went in the computer room and sat down and there was a layer all over my desk of white Tiel dust/dander and I said OMG that's a lot. I never noticed that much, but it's something that you have to live with, just like a dog or cat that sheds.

The only thing I can say is give them more baths or spray them more and that will help with keeping the dust/dander down some, but there is nothing you can do to get rid of it.

Re: How to stop your cockatiel dander?

Dander?...My two perfect ones don't do Dander.............But then I have a one bedroom apt with two 10,000 BTU air conditioners running 24/7. I don't have a speck of dander in the whole house. But my A/C bill is over $200 a month in the summer....Oh Well!

I wonder if birds..like cats, don't shed as much if the temperature is well controlled..Not to hot and not too cold.

Re: How to stop your cockatiel dander?

Is there a point when the dust starts? I haven't noticed any dust with our cockatiel, but he's only 3 months old.

He's VERY messy in other ways, though. He loves to run through his dishes and throws alot onto the floor. He ignores the toys, but entertains himself by dropping stuff. It's really funny to watch him as he cocks his head and leans over the cage to see something fall to the ground.
