Exclamation Blood In My Bird's Cage

I came home from work this afternoon after being gone for less than three hours, and I found blood splattered in my budgie's cage. My two birds look totally uninjured, have never had problems living together, and I can't find anywhere the blood could have come from.

There's nothing coming from either of their feces, but one of my birds has blood on the bottom of their feet. It doesn't look like they were bleeding, it just looks like she stepped in some.

I'm so confused! I have no idea where it could have come from. There's no change in their behaviour, and they seem fine.

    Help?!

Well, they do bleed easily if they are fighting... some of my females had liked to draw blood when fighting...

Since everyone seems fine, I would make sure all the paper used for catching poop is changed out so that there is no possibility of infection. Maybe even remove a couple of the toys that might be hanging... ... and clean all those perches of the old blood so that if there is new blood you will notice it... the new blood will be a bright red, old blood dull red... I have had mean females who have bitten the other birds' toes and made them bleed-- I am not saying that happened to you... ...just casually keep looking for it for maybe today and tomorrow morning...

If you find bleeding from the toe or foot that has reopened then I would place a small shallow bowl with corn starch and put the bird into it feet first. Or pour it on and then clean up afterwards.

Thanks for the advice. As soon as I saw the blood I changed the paper and disinfected the cage. I will most definitely be watching, and when Squirt let me get a closer look at her foot, I noticed that Ping had bitten off half of one of her nails.

    Hopefully it won't re-open. I'll keep checking.

Well, these things do happen. It doesn't mean that there is a problem... I would keep an eye out just in case, but it could just be a one-time occurrence.

I'm praying it is. Seeing the blood almost gave me a heart attack. >.<"

Re: Blood In My Bird's Cage

It occurred to me this morning to check your bird toys very carefully as a nail could be ripped off if a bird was playing with a toy and it got caught in one of the tiny chain links or other tight places. He could have been hanging and stuck and then broke it off... and there might not have been blood right away. Sometimes you might find blood spots on a toy but not if he had been flying away to get uncaught.
