    Exclamation Cockatiel not grooming? :\

Hi everyone. I have a question. Lately, my cockatiel Zeus, has seemed to have stopped grooming himself. I see him doing it sometimes.. but he looks so raggedy now. He lives with my other cockatiel, Kiwi... in which they seem to get along fine.. never fight, and leave eachother alone for the most part. Well back to Zeus, recently he's had a bunch of broken tail feathers, down to the point where he only has like 3 left... And I think Kiwi is biting his feathers and breaking them. Also, to add to the grooming problem... he is constantly after Kiwi, almost like he is so interested in her that he forgets about his grooming... what is going on? Thanks everyone!

usually if a cockatiel stops grooming it is a sign of illness..so I would take your birdie to the vet just to be sure..

Are you sure he's not molting? This will cause a ragged appearance. Also, misting your bird will cause them to preen...try misting him and see if he is indeed grooming or not.

I don't understand, at first you say they pretty much leave each other alone, they you say kiwi bites his feathers and breaks them, and that Zeus is so interested in Kiwi that he neglects everything else.

It sounds to me like they may benefit from separate cages, which could be placed next to each other. This would also allow you to monitor his droppings for signs of illness. Its possible he is not grooming his feathers because of stress in the cage. Please let us know what size the cage is and how you have it setup for them. (Pictures would be excellent)

    Best of Luck
