Yay! A guinea pig! I have a nice show quality black and white peruvian Sow named Stella, (they are the ones with EXTREMLY long hair) and I will probably be getting her a girlfriend next year. Maybe we would get them around the same time?

Not sure Kirby, It depends on what comes of the litter. She has a pair mating as we speak. I am so anxious though!!! I think she said something like 60 days for pregnancy and definelty 3 weeks before adoption. So it might be a little while.

Re: Any suggestions on rodents for pets?

I couldn't vote without rats being on there. I used to work at a few pet stores and I always recommended rats for kids. They are not biters, they love socializing, they tolerate being squeezed a little by kids, Males get very slow and big so they are easy for little hands to carry around the house (plus they loved to be brought around the house), and they are just cute! For years I kept at least 5 rats at all times. Their only downfall is their short lifespan (like any rodent) and the fact that they can be prone to tumors. Fortunately for me, I found a vet that removed them for $25, that was it. So we went in a few times for different rats, all turned out great. I fed them whatever I was eating, along with a diet of Reggie Rat Food (one of the best in my opinions. They also carry Harry Hamster, Charlie Chinchilla, Frankie Ferret Food and others...). They are so great! I did have a litter once, very neat! I wish I had them again, but if they were anywhere near the birds, it would be trouble. I had them when I first got Jitterbug and she flew onto their cage and almost got her feet taken off! I moved her into another room after that and then my mom told me birds or rats...so I found a great home for the rats I had at that time (which was 4 or 5).

I would wait at least until they are 3 weeks, 4 is better. A lot of people think that because they are born with their eyes open and running around, that they are ready to go. They also tend to eat solids at a young age, but are not fully weaned for 4 weeks.

When I worked at Petco, we had a lady bring in a whole litter of G' Pigs that were 5 days old!!!! She wanted to get rid of them and we had to explain that they were far too young and that even though they hit the ground running (), they were not old enough.

Re: Any suggestions on rodents for pets?

They wean around or before 3 weeks. The avid breeders tend to separate them from mom at 3 weeks, as they can become sexually mature at 4 weeks.. Though, many will recommend keeping them with mom til 4 weeks of age.
Anyway, I like guinea pigs and all (work with them on a daily basis), but I dislike the fact that they are so high maintenance. They constantly urinate, and their diet is very elaborate. They are very companionable; most will recommend that you get two. How old is your daughter? Guinea pigs are great pets, just not my cup of tea, I suppose.
Rats are the best, hands down. But they do require more attention than hamsters/gerbils and much more room (and they should be kept in pairs). So, they are a bit more of a commitment (financially and time-wise).
I grew up with hamsters, and now prefer gerbils. I love the little guys. They are extremely active and fun to watch, and urinate very little, as they are desert creatures (and therefore do not drink much). In my experience, gerbils are also MUCH more laid back at a young age in comparison to hamsters. I have never, ever been bitten by a gerbil. However, the one downside is that they can be very destructive.

They all can be great pets. Rats and guinea pigs are much more time consuming, but more personable. Hamsters and gerbils are very low maintenance, but not as companionable.

She is 10. That is what she wants, something companionable. She doesn't want something that she can pretty much just watch in the cage. The smaller animals are too active and harder to handle. I know gp's can be active also, but that's more along the line of what she wants. She said no to rats. She doesn't like the idea of them anymore than I do. Nothing personal to the rats. That's just us.

Guinea pigs are a good choice. I had them when I was little. In the future if she wants any other I would recommend chinchillas...they are pretty cool too.

I would never have any more rats...as long as I have birds. No offence rat lovers. They are nice pets but they can and will kill small birds. Had a bad experiance with them that I wouldn't want to happen again.

I'm glad to hear that I made the right choice for Mo then. I have been doing a lot of research on the gp's and in one of my books it talked about certain pets around them. It said that, because they are both animals of prey and not preditors, small birds and gp's do good together. Of course, if they were ever around each other, they would be watched closely. I watch Mo every time he's out anyway and we def. would do the same for the gp's!

Congrats on your new GP's!! I would have voted rats, too, to me they're far better pets, but I love GP's too. I had one named Winnie (although he was a boy) growing up. He was BRIGHT orange, I mean like a pumpkin, with a bit of white on him. He looked like a baked yam with marshmallow. All scruffy fur. He used to say "weeee weee weeeeee" when we came home to greet us ... although, yes, he did pee alot. And if you squeaked at him he would squeak back. We just kept him in a towel when he was out on or laps, etc. so he wouldn't pee on us. He loved to cuddle and would fall asleep on us.

*sigh* thanks for letting me reminisce. Winnie was 10 when he died.
