    Question about signs of illness

    Hello Everyone.

I have a question that I hope someone will be able to help me out with.

I've had China just under 2 weeks and certainly she is still getting to know us and vice versa.

Over the past 2 days, she has been "fluffed" up most of the day. Her behaviour hasn't really changed - she is out of her cage most of the day either free in the family room or with me. She lets us know when she wants out as well as when she's ready for time to herself, she goes to her cage and settles herself.

My concern is the fluffing - I've read in some places that it's ok, but in others that it is a more ominous sign.

She became very frantic this afternoon when she was in her cage (doors shut) and I was sitting near her on the couch - she started biting at each and every bar of the cage and then at the bottom where the cage is clear. She wasn't chirping or anything though. I eventually let her out and she came right over to me and spent the better part of the next 10 minutes with me, then began to explore the room again.

Has there been a change in temp. in your house? I would check that first. If she is sitting fluffed up all the time, and sleeping a lot more, I would be worried. Also if these symptoms are combined with loss of appetite, loss of energy. If you are really concerned, I would bring her in. Did she get a wellness check when you first got her? If not, that may be in order, if only to help relieve your stress.

    Thank you.

It has gotten colder in the last few days but I increased the temperature in the house. The temp is 74 at her cage currently. She's not sleeping more than usual and appears to be eating and drinking normally. She started giving herself a bath in her birdbath this morning which she hasn't done before.

She did get a wellness check and they said everything was fine then.

She's not overly fluffed up just not sleeked down like before.

Maybe she is just really settling into her new home and becoming comfortable enough to really sit and relax. I know when boomer is just hanging out with us he sits lower and is fluffier then normal because he is comfy and resting. The only time boomer is slicked down is when he on the prowl looking for trouble, afraid of something, curious or nervous. Thats my guess why China is fluffy now but you still need to watch her because your right fluffy feathers is a sign of sickness but usually they have the other signs as well.

Petra also sits kind of low and fluffy when she's contented and/or resting. She plays HARD so by the end of the day she is sleepy, but if you see fluffy AND sleepy behavior during the day...without eating normally...then maybe you should head back to the vet. Did you see an avian vet for China's well-bird check?

Re: Question about signs of illness

    Thank you guys!!

I did see an avian vet the day after I brought her home and he said she was in very good health from what he could tell. He was quite far from my house so I'm looking for one closer to home.

Deanna - I was just looking at your pictures of Boomer and she looks like he does in the photo where he's sitting on the couch (i think it's a couch lol!)
