    Was this a night fright?

I'm confused. Ok, as some of you know, I have a baby monitor for Mo because of the location of his cage from my bedroom. Late last night I was in bed reading(he was sleeping when I went downstairs) and I heard through the monitor a bunch of flapping and the sound of him hitting things in the cage. There was no screaming, that's the part that has me confused. Could this have been a night fright? I went upstairs right away and turned on the light. He was sitting on the bottom of his cage and I talked to him. When I saw he was calm, I reached in and put my finger for him to perch. He hissed at me,which he never does, but did perch. I checked him over, he seemed to be fine and I put him back to bed. He is ok, like I said, I thought there would be some screaming going on or something. idk.

Re: Was this a night fright?

Sounds like he had a night fright. They'll flap, crash and sometimes mangle their feathers, but in my experience there's no squawking or screaming. Afterwards they seem very nervous and on guard for a while. Do you have a night light for Mo? Since my guys have had their night light they've not had any night frights.

yes sounds like a night fright...plesae make sure you have a night light on for them..they get spooked very easily and only cover the cage on three sides..that may help

Yup. Glad he wasn't hurt. Night light should settle him down.

Re: Was this a night fright?

When Bella had her night fright she not only did not make any vocal noise but barely flapped. It's lucky my dad heard her trying to climb back up on to her perch or none of us would have checked her at all (poor baby).

That was her first, and the only night fright she's ever had but it terrifies me to think that if she had another one we wouldn't hear her, when she thrashes she is so quiet! I will add that what your little un had sounds like a night fright for sure. But the solution may vary. Bella's was a fluke though, and did not happen again. So you may want to wait and see, because it can be tricky to figure out what caused it. A night light does seem to help, or sometimes pitch darkness (like I have in my apartment). Bella is a city bird so random truck noises, loud annoying drunks, and weird crashes at insane hours is something she is totally used to. We still can't figure out what caused though, must have been a fluke.

Yeah mine just flap around, no squawking or screaming. They have a nightlight but one of my tiels seems more prone to getting spooked. Unfortunately he sets the other one off when he starts flapping. Luckily we haven't had any injuries and they usually quiet real quick... but they also hiss right after too.

I'm glad Mo is none the worse for wear

Im glad he is ok! Yup, he just had his 1st nighty (as well call them at my home ), poor fella!

Even with a strong night light, and a cage cover, my guys do get the occassional ones

I figured as much. I was just hoping I was wrong. I guess I just pictured a night fright having screeching involved. You would think, huh? Thanks guys!!

Re: Was this a night fright?

It's more thrashing about, hitting, and flapping into things. More brutal IMO than squaking, unless they get really hurt then they will (like few times Maya has ripped out feathers, lots of them) They can be very dangerous

Mine rarely scream during night frights--they just thrash around. So it sounds like a night fright. Glad everyone's OK.

I agree on the nightlight idea.

Any screaming or screeching would just attract more attention which is usually exactly what they want to avoid. I think it's a survival thing.

Re: Was this a night fright?

I agree - it definitely sounds like a night fright to me and most of us know that I have had my share of night frights. My birds have never screamed during a night fright they just always thrash around.

aww the poor little dear. My storm boy has night frights, and so does pepper my sons bird. I keep the kitchen light on for them LOL hubby hates it but i would prefur to have that on and safe birds than hurt babies and having to spend half an hour making them feel better.
I am glad mo is ok
