    sick budgie...any ideas to help?

Hi...my 8 yr old budgie has been acting strange today....fell off his perch twice..first time he got right back up. The last time he seemed off balance when I picked him up. His head was twisted around...like he wants to be upside down. When I picked him up he flapped his wings til he flipped onto his back...all the while his head was still twisted in a weird position. He seemed to regain his balance a little, but his head is still off to one side and he ate a bit of bird seed out of my hand. He's calm now, but he occasionally freaks out...flaps his wings and tries to roll over. Don't know what to do...any ideas? or anyone know what might be wrong with him?

Please see a vet. We can't diagnose. Good luck.
Make a hospital cage using an small aquarium, or critter keeper, put a towel on the bottom, food (millet is a good warming food) & water. Use a hot water bottle or heating pad the cage, or a heat lamp. Monitor closely, don't want to over heat. Call a vet.

Oh dear. If he doesn't have properly bodily control, he is probably quite injured or sick. You need to place him in something where he can't injure himself further (or just hold onto him). Then you need to get straight to a vet.

I hope this helps--best of luck.

    to Tailfeathers.

Yes I agree that you need to get your budgie to an avian vet asap. If he is falling off his perch, and having his head tilt to one side, there could be a number of causes that could be serious, such as a stroke, reaction to inhaling a toxin, or perhaps even a problem with calcium levels, as I know that a low level of calcium can cause some birds to collapse and have seizures, African Greys are especially prone to it. Could he have done anything to cause a head injury, such as flown into something recently?

Whatever the cause, it doesn't sound right, and I suggest you call your closest avian vet straight away and get him seen to. Birds don't have much time to spare once symptoms start, so you need to act quickly, don't leave it.

Best of luck. Please let us know what happens.

hi i'm back and thanks to all who replied. i took him to a vet and she couldn't give a definite answer. she said he could have a tumor, or a stroke, but said he was otherwise healthy. we are giving him antibiotics and an anti inflammatory. now hes fine but he still has his head sideways, cant fly because of that and acts ever so slightly differently. this could be because of his new home in my room. he has his energy back and plays now and hasn't had any spasms of any kind.
