First Clutch Hatching...
A little confused about hahns macaws.
well I was looking at a gallery of hybrid parrots. I know that a lot of you have strong opinions on hybrids but thats not what my question is. They have a picture of a Sun Conure/ Hahns macaw Hybrid.... and a jenday/ Hahns macaw... I thought that you could hybridize conures together, and macaws togethers, but not conures and macaws! Are hahns macaws actually more closly related to conures than macaws?

Re: A little confused about hahns macaws.
Suns and jendays are in the "aratinga" conure genus. Aratinga literally translates to "little macaw". There have been many hybrids successful with macaws and conures, however the offspring are usually infertile (meaning they cannot possibly breed with any bird, even of the same "species")

Huh, thats weird! So there is a possibiltiy of a conure and a larger macaw hybrid? Are all conures able to? Because there are GCC/sun conure hybrids to.. So are sun conures able to hybridize with both or are all conures? Thats weird.. soon someone is going to surprise me by saying lovebirds can breed lorikeets are something!
This is the gallery its pretty neat, even though it has some mutation birds in the hybrid section:

Re: A little confused about hahns macaws.
You can pretty much hybridise any "fairly" closely related bird. that is, cockatoos with cockatoos, macaws with other macaws and conures, any of the lovebirds. Even though the resulting offspring is often beautiful, the practice is pretty irresponsible to hybridize on purpose. if the hybrid is between birds that are not extremely closely related, the offspring will be infertile.

Galah/Citron is gorgeous!
Another head hangs lowly,
Child is slowly taken.
And the violence caused such silence,
Who are we mistaken?

Another mother's breakin',
Heart is taking over.
When the vi'lence causes silence,
We must be mistaken.
