How long can a fruitcake last open in the fridge?

I have one there that I really want to eat, but it has been sitting there a while...

Re: How long can a fruitcake last open in the fridge?

I would imagine that as long as it's not too hard, and there's no sort of mold, it would be safe. Also, smell it - I noticed, from experience, that cakes smell extremely bad when they rot.

Personally, though, if it were me, I wouldn't touch it.
Edit: I do understand that it's fruit cake, but if it's store bought, they put something on it to help preserve it. I suppose, as long as the fruit itself isn't rotting, or doesn't look right, you're ok. I, personally, wouldn't touch such a cake about a week or maybe two (even if it looked ok to eat), but I'm not an expert. We usually put bread in the fridge to keep it from molding because we don't eat it fast enough, but cake doesn't last long enough for that experiment.

It really depends on how it is made dan. If it is a traditanl fruit cake then it will last for ages cause of the alchole in them. Mine last for a few months after christmas if they dont get eaten straight away LOL.
Yeah smell it and see how it feels too, if it still smells fruity and still has the same texture as what it did when you got it then it should be fine

If it's homemade and has plenty of rum/alcohol, you should be fine. If it's storebought and has been open since the holidays I'd be really careful. When it comes to meat, fish and fruit I always say it's better to put it in the composter than take a chance on getting really sick.

Reminds me of the Xmas our Rum and Plum pudding was left out and did not make us sick. It just got stronger.

They last for hundreds of years...I think they even found some good ones in the pharaohs tombs in Egypt...

I would say something would have to be edible in the first place, and/or made of food products in order for it to go bad. Hence, the reason twinkies found in the Egyptian tombs are still tasty as ever.

I know the ones we used to make when I lived in Ireland lasted forever! Of course the fruit started soaking in rum around November 1st!

They normally last quite a long time..that was a really random question...I think they have the same kind of preservatives as christmas cake and that lasts for ages

Thanks for the tips everyone. I think I might just have to throw it out, sadly. It's from early December.

I'm with you Peter. I thought his thread title was the beginning of a joke. Like a Knock-Knock joke or something. Fruitcakes are like Twinkies. I don't think they HAVE an expiration date.

Re: How long can a fruitcake last open in the fridge?

Well, Dan, I didn't know anyone actually "ate" them. I thought that was usually something someone gives to someone that they don't like? Maybe I'm wrong. I think we regifted one once, so it probably would've been fine!
