It definately looks like a punchure mark. They may have been fighting or he hit it against something. Keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or doesn't heal you may want to take him to the vet.

    Re: Beak problem?

if it's definately new then i would suspect fighting... although that said, i've seen a few of the eyering spiecies that have it. it's like the nostril is elongated. Sparks has had one as long as i've had her, although it's smaller than the one on yours.

my vet doesnt seem bothered by it, but we all know my little one is far from show speciman.

i'm actually a little concerned about the patch of missing feathers by his wing. Is this the bird who is being kicked out the next box? maybe your girl is getting a little grumpy with her eggs? if she's pulled out some of his feathers, she could have damaged his beak as well i suppose, but it would have taken some strength. Definately keep a very close eye on them, and if you are AT ALL worried please call your vet.

If it werent for the fact that there are eggs invovled i would be tempted to seperate them... but with possible babies? i dont have the experience breeding lovies to know best what to suggest. Wait til one of the breeders is online and they answer better. i dont knowe if anyone currently has fischer babies, but there are definately other eye-ring lovies, and Bri always has peaches breeding

In the meantime keep an eye on them, and if they start fighting badly i would intervene at least temporarily as an emergnecy measure until you get better advice.

I'll keep an open eye, I actually didn't notice feather loss, I thought it was just fluffed or something.. This is the one in the nest box kicking the other one out. Seems to me, the one pictured behind is the one that comes for foods more often. MOF he is eating millet right now while he/she is in the box. I'll watch closer. Thanks

The hole in the beak can mean mites, which are a problem. They should both see a vet to make sure they do not have mites. Mites can also make the eggs not hatch, so you will want to get that checked out as soon as possible.

eeck bri! if sparks hadnt been tested for everything under the sun already i'd be shooting down the vets with her. Mites can cause beak holes? poor birdies... that sounds horrible!
