    Rubbing vent against perch??

    Hi,

Our little guy displayed some strange behaviour for the first time last night, and we havne't a clue whether it's worrisome or not.

He's 2 years old, in perfect health seemingly, good poos, great feathers, totally clean vent. He's eating well, not drinking much. He's lively as anything and altogether bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

So imagine my suprise when last night he started vigourously rubbing his rear on his perch! He stood on one foot, grabbed onto a hanging toy with the other, and rubbed and rubbed and rubbed like crazy!

At first we just thought he was swinging wierdly, but then I peered closer and his butt was definately in contact with the perch, so I concluded that was the desired effect. I checked his rear and it's perfectly clean.

What the heck is going on? He's never done anything like this before!

I figure it's either worms (but then wouldn't he have some indications around his vent or in his poo?) or some mating thing.

I've done a search on the forums but can't find any info - can someone help?

Hehe, sounds like your little guy is getting sexually mature, and as there are no females around, he's taking out his 'feelings' on his perch. Sounds like a normal male bird to me!

Phew! Well I'm definately glad it's normal (we haven't seen it since), but to be honest, I'm a bit grossed out!

It's like walking in on a member of your family pleasuring himself. Eeeewwwww!!

    Thanks for the reassurance!

your fine, it is wird but at least you dont have a full sized parrot doing it, ive had them , even hens if ya pet their backs, they get weird at times, hehe, its normal and ya can just steer them to another activity or put them up till they calm down, good luck it should pass for awhile,

    Re: Rubbing vent against perch??

So it passes after a while? How long can I expect this to continue?

Cos y'know when I said he hadn't done it since? Boy, did I speak too soon! That very night I went home and he was doing it all evening! Then this morning I woke him up and put his cage in his usual daytime spot and gave him his food and straight away he started doing it! As soon as he woke up! He didn't even notice me leave! Eeeewww.....

I don't really mind (obviously) but it is a bit hard to ignore when you're sitting there watching TV. This frenetic humping in the corner, heh heh. So the sooner he passes through this stage the better. Any idea of a time scale? Are we talking weeks or months or (gulp) years?

I have no idea, but it is "that time" of year. That could be why he's all erm... horny.

Some of my males do this on the edge of their "Hall of Mirrors" or when I hold them. When they go for that mirror toy, it is funny to watch all the other budgies gathered around watching and cheering on. LMAO

Its all good, though it is quite amuzing how they are soooo weird sometimes, but at least, like Juliet said, you don't have a bigger parrot doing that!

It was soo funny but gross once Larkee and i were holding my birds and all of a sudden my female starts doing what you bird is doing but on my friends finger.... We were soo grossed out and she didn't ever want to have the bird on her finger ever again. After that i put her straight back into the cage.
