Offering Birdy Bread? (And a safe recipe for Boomer and Sparks!)

    Hi guys,
So Enoki has been less than enthusiastic about her birdy bread. I was wondering how you guys offer it to your loves? My breeder crumbled hers up and then offered, and Enoki seems to just pick up a piece and toss it. I know some people leave theirs in 1 inch squares...what do you guys do?
I made up a new batch today that is very moist and dense compared to her old stuff. Here is the recipe (good for Boomer and Sparks, no pesky sugar!):

    1 cup cornmeal
    1 egg
    1 tablespoon baking powder
3 jars assorted baby food (I used all fruits in this case, but for Boomy an Sparks, you could easily do veggies if they can't have the sugary fruit)
1/2 cup finely diced/food processed diced bell peppers
1 cup finely chopped/food processed chard (or whatever other greens)
    1/2 cup pellets

This filled about 1/2 of your regular loaf pan, took about 45 minutes to bake at 350, and is very dense and moist. I cut it into 1 inch cubes, it made about 40.

I have one of those really old nut choppers - the kind that you crank the handle, and the metal blades inside chop nuts... Okay, crappy way to describe it, I can try to get a picture up after work tonight.

Anyway, I make big batches of mine, freeze it, and thaw out cubes when I need them. (I make them in muffin cups, cut them into 4ths, and then freeze.)

I warm them up and use the nut chopper to make it into very small crumbs, and all of my birds (finches, budgies, and a lovie) love it this way. I find they all toss the bigger chunks out of the cage.

I give mine warm and in large crumbles. I mold my dough into loaves and bake it so then I cut slices and crumble it into the dishes.

Just a simple questions... am I able to make the cornbread from the boxes then just add my own goodies? Also what about blueberry muffins would that be ok? I would take so much enjoyment watching Marky pig out when he gets home. Recommend any other recipes???

I use the box cornbread and add my own goodies to it. The blueberry muffins might be okay in small doses, but I think it has a lot of sugar in it.

Personally, and this is just me, I prefer not to use the box stuff, as sometimes it can have some funky ingredients in it as well as preservatives. But a lot of people use the boxed stuff. I would just suggest looking for the most natural mixes you can find.

Thanks Rachel for thinking of boomer and Sparky, that makes me smile knowing you care enough to say its safe for them. I will try the mix, never thought about adding in vegetables and I know boomer can eat corn so I would think he could eat cornmeal. Did you make your cornbread from cornmeal and did it from scratch? I make yummy cornbread for us that way but I do add in a bit of sugar but with boomers but I can skip the sugar and he may eat it. He is a picky one but if he eats at table with us I know he would try it. I bought some cute corning ware dishes that are small and perfect boomer size for his.

I am the exact same way. It is not hard to buy a bag of cornmeal from the local organic store in bulk (it is cheaper!) and add a touch of no aluminum baking powder. I am very particular with Darwins foods and my own!

Yup, I just used corn meal and made it up from scratch! I am really particular too (about everything for my pets). Enoki eats all organic....
