    Re: Feather Loss

    Hi kayannn. Welcome to Tailfeathers.

I don't think there is much cause to worry. The feathers will most likely grow back. The only reason they wouldn't is if she thrashed around so much that she did permanent damage to her wings or feather follicles. However, if she did sustain such damage, then you would see lots of blood in the cage, not just a bit of blood on one feather as you described, so I highly doubt that is the case.

Stress can bring on a molt or feather loss, and it sounds as though this experience was very stressful for your little one. I would make sure that your bird is on a very good diet, as this can help with some of the ill effects of the molt or stress, and because she will need a lot of vitamins anf minerals to help her grow back her feathers. Also, since she was thrashing around, watch her closely to make sure she is not favouring a leg or wing. If she did hurt herself, she will need to go to the vet.

Your bird isn't IN the shed, right? She just witnessed the breakin from inside the house?

    Re: Feather Loss

Thank you for your reply. Cleo is not IN the shed - I think she must have heard a lot of banging around and got scared!

Like i said she seems fine, she is eating and drinking and being generally chirpy but i'll keep an eye on her.

    Thanks again!

    Feather Loss

Can anyone help / put my mind at ease?

On Saturday while i was out my shed was broken into and my neighbour had to intervene with some force! Needless to say there was quite a commotion and I think Cleo, my young budgie, may have become distressed and has flapped about wildly in her cage.

When i came home there were feathers everywhere including every one of the long feathers from the bottom of her right wing. One of these feathers had blood on the tip.

She seems fine and is still chirping away and letting me stroke her but i am concerned that she now cannot fly without these feathers - will they grow back??

    Please help!

    Katy

I am glad everything is okay with your bird. So, the person who broke into your shed was apprehended, correct?

Poor Cleo. Are you and your neighbor okay, too?

    Thanks guys!

Unfortunatly the person trying to break in ran away - my neighbour is fine - he's a brave man!

Cleo seems fine - being her usual cheeky self this morning.
