Exclamation How To Keep Mexican Walking Fish?

I have become quite fond of a funny creature called the Mexican Walking Fish or sometimes Axalotles. But before getting one I was wondering if anyone had some good info about them such as: are they good pets to have? Are they easy to look after? Do they like being handled? What do they eat? what climate do they like to live in?
So If anyone owns one as a pet, please give me some hints.

Re: How To Keep Mexican Walking Fish?

    they are awesome!!!

    i love them!

my mate has some. which form would you want them to be in? the juvinile or the adult? as juvies they stay in the water and you cant really handle them, though if you have your hand in the water you can! *and i do!!! LOL*

the juvies eat a special kind of meatish type food, my mate feeds hers this frozen food, and you have to hold it infront of them, they are blind. they can also eat chicken... but a balanced frozen food tends to be good.

they live in cold water, a nice long tank is idea, they like plants to hide in and behind.

i do not know alot about transforming them to their adult forms, i know it involves them needing to grow lungs.

but they can stay their whole lives in the juvie form, they can even reproduce in this form.

they are awesome pets! i want some!!!!

yea, they aint no way a fish!

they are quite a specialised species and do need a bit of special care, you cant expect to dump them in a tank and hope for teh best, they are a bit of work

I know there is some one on here who has two or three of them. I remember them posting a huge thread about them. Man, if only that person was here haha. I can't remember the name. They'll show up eventually lol.

Re: How To Keep Mexican Walking Fish?

There is some one else who has two of them. I think they live in NZ, shoot i can see there avatar and the signiture in my mind , but i cant think of there name. If you search some of the old threads i am sure you will find the person i am talking about. If my memory servers me correctly the university science department was breeding them and well they had to many and so they took and gave them a home, one is pink and the other is gray/brown. they have grown there legs in, and the darker one has an extra finger on each foot.
It is going to drive me nuts that i cant think of this persons name. I know i asked them a few questions about them, and this person was more than willing to answer them.

well but at least you know there is some one else here that has them that posts here.

Re: How To Keep Mexican Walking Fish?

You can actually have water coolers in your tank to keep the tank cool. Some australians on the axolotl website do this (www.axolotl.org).
    Have fun!
