    harrisons

so about last week i had emailed harrisons for a sample of food. and less than a week its here! so i gave a few peices to koda, and well i think that he thinks that its a toy. hmm. what should i do? should i add a few peices to water or juice? what would you do with a free sample? i'd really like to give Koda this food instead of what he is on now. so im willing to do whatever i can.

    Thank You Cara!!

    What size did you get?

I would try soaking in a bit of juice or mixing with his favorite foods. If he's already on pellets, try adding the harrison's in with his other food. You can also try eating some in front of him (it's human grade, tastes sort of like lima beans).

    Re: harrisons

they sent me the high potency fine pellets. i've tried eating one in front of him, btu he was more interested in trying to eat out of my mouth then taking the food from my hand. silly bird.

also i have tried to switch him to other foods by mixes him with his currant pellets but he ignored to new ones. but maybe il try to just put some pellets and soak them and then give them to him as a treat to see what happens.

    Thank You Cara!!

If Koda does not warm up to the fine size, try the coarse. Merlin won't touch small pellets, he likes to hold them to eat, so the coarse he loves.

    Re: harrisons

Mine really like the fine size and they play more with the larger sized pellets. The sample they sent me really didn't do anything. I had to get the 1 lb. bag and start mixing it with their fruitblend zupmree before they really got into loving the food.

Yes, every bird is different, that is why it is important to offer fresh foods/pellets in a variety of ways.

    Re: harrisons

I recently gave Cayenne and Cori the fine sized Harrison's pellets and found two birdie butts up in the air with their heads buried in their pellet bowls. I was thrilled to see them chowing down, after trying so many types that they rejected.

After a week now, Cori ( the caique) is still eating them, but Cayenne seems not to be.

hmm Lori Ann, il give that a try, i should have realized that because Koda always holds his food when he's eating it. thanks for the tip!

    Re: harrisons

Even if Koda refuses to eat them, keep trying!! It took me 3 weeks of trying (including me eating a quarter of the bag) before my senegal would eat Harrison's. Many times he would put the pellet in his mouth but immediately spit it out. During the third week I spread the pellets out on the coffee table and pretended to eat them but refused to let him try, even if he showed interest. Eventually I nibbled on some and actually handed him the bit I had chewed (gross I know). As soon as he tasted it that he went to eat the pellets on the table and absolutely loved them!

Be careful doing this, as human saliva is harmful to birds.

Well, if you guys don't have success with the Harrisons, another Organic bird food that I have had a lot of success with is the Foundation formula. Enoki is so-so on the Harrison's, but LOVES LOVES LOVES the Foundation formula (spicer's blend). It is about 1/2 the price too.

Sara, if he still won't eat them, add them to birdie bread. Even grind up the coarse(coffee grinder, but make sure Koda is in his cage, it scares the poop out of Merlin!) I add fine Harrisons to my birdie bread, because Sully(budgie) still won't eat them, but he eats birdie bread!
