    Unhappy Prolapsed bottom??

    Hi guys. new here.
I got some bad news with my bird today.

My 7 year old female cockatiel has had a difficult week.
i noticed that she wasnt herself, sleeping a lot and poo was clinging to her feathers so i took her into the local avian vet. turns out she had a fungal stomach infection of some kind. she was at the vet for four days undergoing observation, treatment [ a diet change - seed to mash powder/pellets - she likes it and plays with the pellets] and today the vet said she was good to go home as long as i could give her medication.
i went and picked her up and she was looking a lot beter, but still not quite herself.
three hours after i got home i noticed that one of her poos were red so i checked her bottom and it was all bloody. She didnt seem in pain or anything though, she still demanded her head scratched!

We rushed her to the vet and they said it was a prolapsed rectum and they would have to keep her for now.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Is this common? Ive read some stories but they wernt to nice. Aroha has never laid eggs before and im really worried. please let me know!

Oh, poor little one I'm sorry, I don't know much about that condition, but I really hope she recovers. It sounds like she is in good hands with the vet; it's a good thing you took her in right away.

Did the vet give you any idea what the outlook is?

    thanks guys.
yeah she is definetly in good hands.
The vet thinks that she is trying to poo out something solid. I dont know exactly what they have done to help her but she has to be kept in for two more days. i hope she will be okay..

Thanks for the support guys. I will update this page and post some pictures of her.

    Re: Prolapsed bottom??

Nick, prolapsed cloacas are not that common, but they do happen. You tend to see it more often in larger birds and chronic egg-layers. Has you little girl ever laid any eggs?

    Re: Prolapsed bottom??

No, never before has she laid eggs. At first I thought that it could be because of the sudden change in her diet.

Ive been reading a bit and have read that it could be caused by a calcium deficientcy. Lack of exercise also dosent help. Shes not very active as it is and over the past week she has been less active.

The vet will be giving me a call tomorrow morning to update me. I will be sure to let you guys know whats going on.

    Re: Prolapsed bottom??

Did the vet take an xray? My Cleo had the same thing, and it showed that she had a collapsed egg inside her, which required surgery to remove. Good luck with Aroha.

No, no xray. They think that she was straining to much because she has a sore stomach?
    A collapsed egg ouch!

Aroha is looking a lot beter now. A blood test came back and it turns out she has had a tummy bug[?] called Gardia which she is now being treated for. They want to keep her in for another day though

I will be very happy to get her back. I cant wait!

    Thanks for the support guys!
