Question How much do cockatiels sleep?

    Hi,

My cockatiel Ada has 2 months and a week. I write this to be sure that all is ok.

The last 2 days she sleeps during day sometimes for short periods of time but very often. She eats, plays, combs her feathers, and then gets sleep.

She sleeps a lot of times during the day since 2 days ago. Before that, she only slept during night.

Do your cockatiels sleep during the day? How much? Is this normal?
Adult birds sleep during day for short periods of time?

    Thank you very much.

    Hi Jordi,
my cockatiel, she is 17 weeks now, sleeps during the day, too.
She especially likes to sit on my shoulder...
then she cleans herself, gives a loooong yawn,
and then she lifts up one leg, fluffs up and goes to sleep.
This is perfectly normal, even during the day.
    She is VERY cute.

Yes, ours sleep in the day too. A cockatiel day for us is shouting, flying, sleeping, eating, singing, sleeping, preening, flying, eating, sleeping........
The naps are short, about 10 mins sometimes, but seems to give them lots of energy!

Thanks Tracy, mine is the same. Sleeps a while and then plays. This evening she was all time playing, biting the keyboard and the graphics tablet.

My bird sleeps at nearly the same time of day every day between 12-3 PM.

That is completely normal, Jason. You are very fortunate that she is settling in so well. That tells me she is very comfortable in her home. And if you should hear her "beak grinding" (literally grinding her beak), then that is the utmost level of "relaxation" she can have. Keep up the GREAT work with her! She is doing just fine!

    Hi Max,
Thanks, I've been putting in a lot of time to make her feel comfortable. She is very personable. When I was at the pet store she jumped onto my hand. When we got home she was scared of me but once I held her for a hour or so she opened up very quick. But yes.. She sleeps a whole lot. Our routine is a snack, quick feather cleaning, some beak grinding and then she passes out. I was just wondering if it was normal. I don't mind it at all, just wanted to make sure I'm doing everything properly. Thanks a lot for the feed back. It's much appreciated!

Hello Everyone, I am new to the forum as I have a new member to my family. Chancer is 4 months old and an absolute delight!
I found you by questioning my babies sleeping habits. Chancer takes naps on and off all day. Also likes to sleep on my shoulder.
He mases the cutest little baby sounds, grinds his beak, tucks his head in and falls asleep. He does not however lift one leg. He sleeps on both legs.... Is this okay?

Thank you so much Max, Chancer has been with me for 3 weeks and we have fallen totally in love with each other.
I have reared a 4 week old African grey so know everything about them but the cockatiel is so very different in so many ways.
He is so alert and highly intelligent. Watches everything and learns so quickly. African grays are very demanding of your time but Chancer
thrives on the contact. He makes the cutest little sounds when I take him out the cage and you cant mistake the pleasure he gets from being with me.
    He has changed my life

Re: How much do cockatiels sleep?

Yes, every parrot species have their own behaviors. For many years I homed only budgies. About 15 years ago, I decided to get 4 cockatiels..all at one time!!! Yikes!!! I thought they would be like my budgies in behavior! Boy was I wrong! I mean to tell you I had my hands full. They all were about three months old, and were always into mischief! One morning I woke up to hearing them flying all over the house!! Big Bird..he was named after sesame street character, found a way to open the seed cup door, and they all came out....to play!!!!!!!! Yes, cockatiels are very, very smart!! Those four sure outsmarted me!!!

They will always love you back, even if they do bite on occasion. All birds have that habit!! We will watch for updates! You two are already best friends!!!! Yaaaaayyyy!

Re: How much do cockatiels sleep?

Hi There, Chancer seems to be doing well. Loves to play with my son and I. Anything new gets her attention immediately.
I just have one concern at the moment, she wont eat anything other than her seeds. I have been trying everything to try and get her to try fruit & veggies & rice.
But she refuses to even try it. I have noticed in the last 2 days that her poo's are small white little balls. Softish but all white and no liquid.
I give her fresh food and water daily and change her water if I see she has put food in it. I have seen her drinking.
I have tried to look up information regarding this but cant really find anything.
Can you possibly advise me on this problem?
    Thank you very much
