    Lovebird Collar info

Ok, here is the way I make my collars for pluckers/mutilators.

Step one, get all equipment ready (gauze pads, medical tape, scissors, toilet paper tube/paper towel tube). (measuring tape is for size comparison)

Step two: Cut a section of the cardboard tube (wide enough to stretch the neck out a bit):

You may need to cut it shorter so there is only a very little bit of overlap when placed on the neck.

Step three: Wrap the cardboard piece in the gauze (make sure it is stretched tight and use the whole piece of gauze for maximum comfort).

Step four: Make sure the end piece of the gauze is on the outside of the collar so it doesn't rub on the neck, then tape it with the medical tape.

Step five: Cut one end (the end that will be closest to the skin) rounded so it doesn't have corners that will rub too much.

Step six: Add a bit of tape to the other end (the end that will go over and tape the whole collar on).

Step seven: Wrap it around the bird's neck. Make sure the wings are able to move, but the neck has little give so there is little room to reach around to the back of the body.

Your so great Briana to show with pics how you make the collars for your birds, I hope it works well with Squeakers. Is that Fletcher in your pic? I forget really who it is but how is he doing these days? Is that a new picture?

    Yippee!!!
Thanks! I will have to do it tonight! It looks so much better then the other cone, and I'm sure he will be semi glad to be out of that cone. Thanks again for all this help! It just might be the answer to all Squeakers problems... Well some of them at least Squeakers and I truly appreciate it

That is Io, my newer bird. I am pretty sure that "she" is a "he". The pic of him in may hands is new, the other is older.

He tolerates it so well now. Very little struggling and when I put him back in the cage, he doesn't freak out like he used to, he will go about his normal activities.

No, that is Shamus. The boy that has the collar is Io (that's i-o).

    Re: Lovebird Collar info

question- can they actually FLY in it?
i;m thinking it might make sparks a bit happier. she really seems fed up, and this might be an option worth considering (although i'm asking the vet tonight if i can take her out the collar totally)

    Re: Lovebird Collar info

Oh yes! Flying is no problem because the collar sits above the wing bends and it is not bulky or wide so it doesn't weigh them down or get in the way of wing movement! I am telling you, if they get used to it, it works great!

I think I got the design from Laura (?) who has the Goffin's Cockatoo. I believe the 'Too's name is Angel? She had posted some pics of different collars they tried and I don't know if they ended on this design or not, but I saw it and decided to give it a try since it could be scaled down to Lovebird size.

    Re: Lovebird Collar info

Actually this particular collar was adapted from the one Wolfysluv shared under "other parrots". We've both been sharing the different type collars that worked or how they evolved so others could benefit from our experiences. That is great you were able to altar to work for lovebirds! It looks so simple to do too and that is important - and still allows the bird to fly. That is great!

    Re: Lovebird Collar info

Aw yes, Diane! Yes, I couldn't remember if it was from your thread or Wolfy's! Thanks!

I think the main problem with this design is that is is somewhat easy to remove. But if you keep putting it back on, the bird should get used to it and leave it on for longer periods of time. But they are cheap so if they destroy it after a few days, it is not such a loss.

    Re: Lovebird Collar info

I think if you had a long piece of tape around the collar it would take a while for your bird to remove the collar. Hopefully sometime during the time she is working at it you would spot her and repair the damage before the collar is successfully removed. Better they chew at the collar then themselves.

Exactly. I wouldn't say it is that easy to remove, but yes, it can be removed. I think if it is tight enough (obviously not too tight) and it is wide enough (obviously not too wide) and the tape runs the length of the collar and even over itself (which Diane suggested), it would be almost completely non-removable.

It is easier to eat and fly with this collar than other collars, so I think it is easier for the bird to get used to, which is one of the reasons why Io has left her's on for so long.

briana, I just seen this post and was wondering if the collar is only for birds that pluck there blood feathers or for any plucker?
I have a cherry head that has plucked his whole stomach area but hasnt went for the blood feathers yet, also I just rescued a cockatiel that is a plucker.
