Pepe is at least 44 years old. He was probably wild caught and lived in a cage the size of a cat carrier stood on end for 20 years. He moved to another family member who kept him in a cockateil cage (about twice as big as the other one) Luckily he was loved and let out alot, but they didn't really know Pepes true needs. He only had dowl perches and one toy of paper strips tied to his cage by string.
He was taken in by UK Parrot Rescue when the owner moved to a smaller place and couldn't keep him anymore.
He is now with me in his forever home and has come on in leaps and bounds since the 6 weeks he has been with UKPR. He arrived at mine at 3am yesterday morning!
I thought he may take a while to settle in but I coudn't have been more wrong! He has totaly put his trust in me from the first moment. I think it is called love at first sight
Here's a little clip of him on his first day here enjoying scritches. Before I had the camera he was closing his eyes too.
He is in the process of learning how to play with toys, using different perches, eating new foods and feeling comforable in a proper sized cage. Bless his cotton socks
Jojo..... if you spot this thread, you might be interested to know that Pepe isn't to good with balance either! I know he's an old boy but I thought of Flora as soon as I felt him wobble when I moved. I'm sure he would easily fall to the floor like a brick if I'm not careful enough!
Around 60 I think, so hopefully he's got a good few years left in him. I worry that his diet might have been bad though, and we know what long term damage that can do
Thanks everyone
He was in quarantine before he came to me so I have been able to introduce him to Bo and Wookie already. I'm not sure he knows what to make of them to be honest, but Wookie is doing her best to make friends and keeps saying hello to him!
He was beak grinding last night! :
Congrats! Oooh those little happy bird noises just melt your heart, don't they?? He's so cute. I'm glad to have another amazon guardian on here - there just aren't enough of us!!
Funny that he can't balance too well, either. Maybe it's a couch potato amazon thing...?
So glad you found this thread Jojo! I was wondering if the balance was an ammie thing.... he is so clumsy compared to my other fids. All his movements are very slow and deliberate. I think he probably has atrophied (sp?) muscles, especially in his wings due to his living conditions and age, so it's not easy to compare really.
Your right about the noises, they really do melt your heart! Even his girlie screams make me smile lol. He doesn't talk, but has a few noises he imitates including a trim phone from the 70's. That really shows his age!
Ammies often get a bad press, but Pepe is a sweetheart. He just wants some lovin' If it wasn't for reading about your two on TF and how well you get on with them, I might have been more hesitant in taking him on. So thanks Jojo I am so glad I welcomed him into my life
AWWwwww I'm glad you got him too!! Yeah, they get such a bad rap, but I think it's just because inexperienced people get them and then are in over their heads. They can be so lovely.
Linda - I am so glad Pepe found his way to you. He will live a good life now. What a truly sad story about his past. I love a story with a happy ending though, he is in his forever home, how great!!
Sounds like everything is going great, I am so happy for you and Pepe!!! Congratulations!!
PS: love the saying you wrote " bless his cotton socks " to cute - I have never heard that before.
Oh he's so sweet I also loved his noises, my Stella when shes in the mood for love ( ya know them spring time moments when they REALLY want some lovin ) her noises are the sweetest... But I have to break her heart and tell her " I love ya baby girl but I just can't love ya the way you are looking for" lol ...
"It isn't a coincidence that both birds and angels have wings."
Pepe is still doing really well. Bo and Wookie are keeping him active as he has to climb around his cage to tell them to push off He was desperately trying to give me kisses and would make funny piggy noises while fluttering his wings for a while, but that's stopped now. Wasn't sure if it was a baby or mating dance, I may well find out next spring! Now he just comes out and eats all my dinner then nods off, bless him.
Brandon - he's stopped doing the piggy noises now but if he starts them up again I will deffo try to catch them on video. I have a feeling it was a loooooove song so might be a while before he thinks I deserve to be wooed again!
Lauren _ he's not going anywhere! It broke my heart to know his history, even though he was loved. He'll be spending the rest of his days with me. The only possible reason he would be going anywhere else is if I pop my clogs before him!
