    Re: Cross-breeding

The person who bred the galahtiel didn't do it on purpose. She just had an aviary of tiels with one galah in it. She didn't think they would breed, but then one day she found an odd looking bird in the aviary!!
But yeah, its pretty stupid when people mess with stuff like that. And the other ones are obviously purposful, no one would excpect a tiel and a cockatoo to breed, but two different kinds of conures is kind of expected.
I guess not all of them would be infertile, but I hope they are. I would think that breeding a GCC and a sun would be like breeding a masked and a PF lovebird. But I have heard that some eyering/PF hybrid lovebirds are fertile! Then again, some times mules are fertile to..

Do the different types of conures come from different places? Are their instincts different too?

    Re: Cross-breeding

There is lots of crossbreeding for macaws going on in NZ,
because there are not enough macaws in the country
    and new imports are forbidden.
So they crossbreed military macaws with blue and golds,
because there are not enough blue and golds.
The outcome parrots are still fertile and can breed with each other,
and as far as I know there are no bad genetic effects.
I think the reason for the possible preeding is that several
macaw species/ subspecies are very closely related to each other.

Oh, I also have red in a book that it is possible to crossbreed
sulfur crested cockatoos with galahs and the outcome
is something looking like a Major Mitchells Cockatoo.

    Re: Cross-breeding

Ok...I didn't think that crossing a tiel with a 'too would work but there it goes! In New Zealand I have only ever seen ONE blue and gold macaw(it was sad according to me)
Feel free to do as many pictures as you want I would love to see. I was wondering(not at all am I thinking of doing it) but would it be alright(i won't do it seriously it is just a question) if you put a 'tiel with a IRN or would they kill each other. I am only saying this because mine seem to get along reeeally well through the bars of each of the cages but do you think they would be safe together(in a bigger cage most probably if I ever did do it) I think the IRN is alot more interested though...(I won't do it by the way even though I have said that 3 times now) Would it work at all?

    Re: Cross-breeding

You could probably let your birds out at play time together. But not live together. IRNs are known for being quite agressive with other birds.
Here are some of Galah/BE2's (corella's)

I tiel can breed with a cockatoo because they are a kind of cockatoo!
    This is the galatiels parents

Makes me wonder if its possible to cross a parrotlet and an amazon...hmmm...

Some are very alike, some are different. There is one small group of conures (Brown throated, Aztec, and halfmoon) that use old termite nests as nests. So sometimes they are reluctant to go in nestboxes. Most of the other kinds are different because of what age they breed, when in the year, in seasons or prolificly ect.

    Thanks, Mell.

I do not find those birds attractive at all... seeing the parents together is weird too.

No no! Not the Galah tiel mix...too freaky looking. I'm sure they are great pets with personalities all the same.

    Re: Cross-breeding

I don't know what region of australia cockatiels live in, but I think galahs have a very wide range of where they live. I don't doubt that you could see those two speices (Sp?) together in the wild. I dont find any of the cockatoo crosses very atractive either, except the galah/citron for some reason I really like that one. But all of these hybrids are quite uncommon. Its wierd that the macaw hybrids are seen as more acceptable. But I haven't ever read that they have different breeding styles, and they aren't infertile, and none that I have heard of are all confused about how to use a nest box. Who couldn't find these amazing birds atractive though?
