Lovebird throwing seeds out of feed tray?

She gets in her feed tray thingy and just buries her face in it and with both legs slings seeds far and wide, only stoping to munch on the occasional seed. Is this possibly a dietary deficiency? How can I stop her from doing this?

She's a masked lovebird with a red beak (and meaner than hell, )
Two 'Tiels: KK a white (male?) cockatiel, and Sunny, a female Lutino who loves her food.

My lovie sometimes does this just to be a pest. Sometimes she does it when she wants veggies instead of the seeds and/or pellets that I gave her.

Re: Lovebird throwing seeds out of feed tray?

She might be doing this because she is choosing her favorite seeds. Or she could be doing it for no reason other than to entertain herself.
Regardless, a diet of seed only is not balanced. I would suggest to read the articles in Bird Information (upper left of page) as you will find a lot of good tips on converting her to a more balanced diet.

As for the slinging- you can find seed guards at most pet supply stores or on-line.

    Squeakers does this as well...
Most of the time, I think he is just being picky and whats to find his favorite thing in his food dish... Inf act, one time he chucked apples at my wall because he just wasnt in the mood for them... (I switched them for peas....)
However, sometimes, and this is him just being a little devil, when I went over my cousins house for two days, I came back and saw a full food dish (My dad swaps it for me when Im gone ) When i open the door for him to come out, he will go to his food dish, and just chuck the food everywhere! Making a huge, ginormous mess for me to clean up.... *sighs* And whenever I put him back in the cage, he simple goes and rings his bell toys as loud as possible, just to be a brat about me leaving him...
They are such cocky little fids, it really will just take time to realize what actually they are doing that for...
But I agree on what Karen said. Adiet of only seed is not good for birdies at all. If worse comes to wrose, at LEAST try to get some type of fruit or veggie in there.
    Best of luck

    There.

lol sparks does this too. She seems to believe that i go out of my way to hide all the best seeds at the bottom of the dish. (come to think of it my hamster is guilty too)

they eat it afterwards tho. she wanders round and picks it up. i think she's lazy lol doesnt want to walk all the way to her food pot, so has food everywhere

PS- red beak probably means fischers. and its unusual for them too be really nasty. maybe its a dietry issue...

Yep, mine acts like she's a dog digging a hole. When she's mad, though, she'll look at me then knock food out of her bowl using her beak.

Jinx is a rare one, Sarah.

But I wouldn't trade my bulldozer lovie for anything!

It makes me laugh - if he spills seeds, he just stares at them like his little world was crushed! He's such a dork.

That's so funny! Crackers sees how fast she can run in place in her food dish and looks over her wing to see how far the seed is rooster tailing!

LOL Razzle does the exact same thing. I ended up buying a seed catcher which stops most of the seed going onto the ground.

Re: Lovebird throwing seeds out of feed tray?

I have one lovie who will wait until I am watching and throw the seeds across the lounge.
I swear he knows when the vacuuming is finished and messes up the lounge again.
But I must say he and his partner are both very good eaters.
