    cleaning snotty noses

ok, i know they are called nares, but sparky's are really bunged up (again) and wheezing (probably because of the bunged up nares)

she's still eating well and playing happily, and vocalisng almost as normal (bit quieter at night)

so my question is ... how can i help her clean her nares? i'm going to try steaming her in the bathroom for a while later and see if that helps, but is there anything else i can do?

i'm assuming that wet cotton buds would be a VERY bad idea, as it would basically be like putting water up her nose.

anything anyone can think of for me to try on my teeny little lovebird?

    lots of love and thanks,

    Helen

(ps... she's on antibiotics in case anyone is worried!)

Hmm... good question. I would also be worried about wet q-tips, you wouldn't want her to choke. I'll be interested to see other peoples' responses though.

Diego's vet uses something like the end of a nail file, maybe? I've seen him do it a few times, but I'd personally be too scared to do it myself.

If you do want to try it, then I think some steam first would be a good idea. I would suggest a shower with you, but that's probably not best since she's sick.

Poor Sparks, I hope that cute girl gets better soon.

Can you use a bulb syringe to clear her nose?

Best wishes to you and Sparky.

*Edit* Just in case you don't know what a bulb syringe is I've added a site with a picture. You suction stuff out of noses and ears with it.

lol you must be pyschic,,, i was just sat here thinking... WHAT?

i dont have anything like that,... and it appears a bit hard poor sparks... i will try getting to a chemist tommorrow... i wonder if a normal syringe would work though?

last time i just used my nail... it was worse last time... kinda (sorry this is gross) crusty around the feathers, and when i pulled it off the feathers, it came out of the nostrils too. i suppose this is better in that obviously less gunk... i'm just not sure how to tackle it, and i'm sure having her nose so bunged up is what's making her wheeze

i'm just warming up the house at the moment so i can steam her in the bathroom... it's a bit late, but she's still awake lol and i want the house WARM. i know when i get out the shower i feel cold... so guess she would too. Or am i being a bit over protective (and do i care if i am lol)

    Re: cleaning snotty noses

We get boomers nose area wet and wipe away his feathers from his nose holes. Boomer is comfortable cuddled up in our hands so this might not work with birds that want to squirm around, boomer loves it when we pick his nose, silly man he is. We then use the end tip of tweezers and push back all the tiny feathers surrounding his nose that dont wipe back with water and usually its a tiny feather stuck down his nose hole causing him to get all clogged up. I dont see why you couldnt try to use the tweezers to carefully push back the gunk like we do the feathers... We DO NOT put the tips of the tweezers together and pull anything out, we just use the end of the tweezers because its something that is a perfect size to pick out (really push back) boomers boogers

I hope sparky gets over her nose troubles, HUGS!

    Re: cleaning snotty noses

I know a big amazon who has troubles with the snotty nose thing and his owner will steam him and it really does seem to help him out so hopefully streaming Sparks will help her out like it does this amazon I know.

Boomers been OK lately, still on meds but this is something that seems to be normal these days and it least they make him feel good. He is really crazy and wild mostly so it does help him. Someday Helen, I dream of both boomer and Sparks being normal little birds, happy, healthy and not having to take medicine... good dream isnt it

    yeah hunny it really is

interesting thread going in deep thinking about ghosts that has started to discuss healing. my best mate is into distance healing and reiki. he says half of it is good, positive thoughts and energy. so hang onto the image, wrap it in white light and BELIEVE in it.
