    your experiance with aviator harness

    Hi alll

Well we have got dave a aviator harness as we would like to take him out with us so he doesnt become lonely.

so im just woundering what are your experiances with these and learning the bird on how to put it on etc....

We've had it on dave once but he hated it so we took it of straight away. We've watched the dvd which is great. But dave doesnt let you do all those thing to him so has anyone else had the same problem? If you get what i mean

We let him see it we have to hid the actuall harness bit at first then let him pull it out of our hands at his own speed then hes fine with it. Hes ok with the cord bit. He plays with it and i put it over his back but since hes had it on hes become scared of it again when we lift it up. (think we rushed him a little to much which i dont think did us any good really). Before the harness arrived we were holding his wings up so that he'd get used to this a bit more. It has helped a little.

Did you follow the instructions to the dvd exact or did you make your own adjustments to it i.e. the way its put on over the head etc?

As when we put it on we slipped it over his head we didnt hold his head as hes not comftable with us holding his head.

We realise that this is maybe a long process or it may not be but any help or advice is very much apriciated.

    Thanks
    Kirsty

Re: your experiance with aviator harness

i'm so glad you asked this - i will be watching......

i know mary jo has one for her tiel.... i bought a harness for kito last week at petsmart (not the aviator) - if you EVER told me a parrot could wriggle that much, i wouldn't have believed you. i'm lucky to get the neck piece on him - but to go under the wings????? uh, yeah, okay. i am not 100% convinced i'm putting it on correctly - but i think i am.

i saw that an online store here (parrotdise perch) has the aviators - they also have a shop, so i may send my husband to the store to get one - that way i can return it if i chicken out.

I know what you mean, Crouton... I tried the same one from Petsmart for Jinx, and holy cow, can he wiggle! Never bit during it though... I had to end up taking it back though, even the smallest one they had adjusted to the smallest size was a bit big on him.

    Good luck with Dave, Kirsty!

omg i dont even know where to start with those harnesses.. i bought one last week for my quaker Polly and forget about it ! i have no idea how it goes and Polly just wont let me put it on him ! its impossible.. im bringing it back as soon as i can..the picture on the box totally doesnt explain how to put it on and what ties with what. its completely ridiculous. everyone in my family has tried to fix it together and try to figure out how it goes but nobody succeeded.. it just goes to show how complicated it is. good luck with it and please if u figure it out let me know ! thanks

Their process with the Aviator is a tried and true process. Don't skip steps or your bird will NEVER wear the harness and you've just wasted your money.

It -will- take a long time. Our Dusky loves us, will go on her back in our hands, and it's STILL taking MONTHS.

Take your time, be so patient it hurts.

Re: your experiance with aviator harness

I LOVE the aviator, I've tried the flight suits andthe feather teather and they both were useless.
Both Elvis and Vegas use them, Elvis was pretty easy, he'll put up with anything and once it's on he only fusses a little bit. Vegas was suspicious from the start and becouse of a bad experience with the flight suit freaked when i first brought it out. After wearing it a few times he's gotten alot better, I do towel his feet when I'm putting it on thought because he grabs the straps.
i take them for walks, to meetings, in the car and oce they are out they are ingrossed in being outside and barely notice the harness.
As far as actually getting it on it's rather straight forward and i do it like the dvd shows.

The Aviator isn't confusing like the other harnesses. It's really easy. As for getting your bird to wear it - that's a little harder. I found this website, with step-by-step instructions, to be very helpful.

Mary Jo that pic is so cute!

We have one here too, but haven't managed to get it over his head yet. We are now up to touching his beak with it, but he was terrified of it the second it came. It is a long process.

Re: your experiance with aviator harness

The Aviator has worked out great for Mango and me. I'm hesitant to get one for Kiwi because she's a nervous wreck (and I don't mean that in a bad way) as it is, I can't imagine trying to put an Aviator harness on her. But so far Mango has worn it about 7 times.

The video is great, it really shows you how to introduce the Aviator successfully. I kind of sped up the process because I'm impatient with things like that. =/

The first time Mango wore the Aviator she didn't like it at all. She was uncomfortable and she kept picking at it and she was visually upset. When I put it on her, I took her outside to the park and tried to distract her and after a little while I took her back home and got her out of it. The experiences have improved with time. Now she doesn't try to break it with her beak, she'll just peck at it to rearrange her feathers or the harness. She doesn't like me holding her head so I just slip it on and she does struggle a bit because she doesn't like being knocked off balance when I get it on her but she's come a long way. At first, it would take me 15 minutes to get it on, now, I get it on in 1-2 minutes. Just follow the steps the DVD shows you. It's really simple once you've tried it a few times, I suggest you really get to know how the harness works before trying to get it on.

    Good luck!

I have only heard good things about them. A few of my clients use them and they love them as well, I've never had an issue with them. I'm ordering one for Tyrael soon.

The Aviator Harness does not make a lovie-sized harness. The smallest they make is 'tiel sized: http://www.theparrotuniversity.com/aviator_harness.php

The company that Flightsuits has a bird diaper-flight suit that is small enough for lovebirds.

That's kinda what I was thinking... I might try a flightsuit, I'd really like Jinx to be able to come outside with me when I'm reading in the backyard, and not have to be in a travel cage. I'll look into them again. Thanks!

Re: your experiance with aviator harness

Because of how much Mary Jo loved her aviator, and after seeing Elvis at the May meeting, I ordered one up for Cosmo. That was back in early May. I am ashamed to say, that I haven't even watched the video yet, much less tried to put it on Cosmo yet. LOL

I just leave it out for her to play with, but she doesn't have much interest in it.

I am glad this thread got brought up though. I was recently thinking that her flight feathers were starting to grow in, so I'll need to figure the Aviator out sooner, rather than later.

I will watch the DVD, hopefully by this weekend, and attempt to put it on her. I'll let everybody know how it goes...

Re: your experiance with aviator harness

With Molly, Goffin's cockatoo, Sal was able to put it right on her when we first got it. Not that she likes putting it on but she does know that as soon as it is on she gets to go bye bye. She does not fight it being put on or being taken off.

Tommy, cockatiel, was a whole different story. I am able to do all the things in the video with him with no problem at all. He just puts up a fight with putting it on, but once on and we go out, he is fine. Taking it off is another story also, he fights me.

Now as for Emma, African Grey Congo, she is still scared of the thing. Emma is not two years old yet, so we have plenty of time to work with her.

The problem we have here in Ohio is the weather. You can not take the birds out for months with the harness. Then you have to start over again in the spring. I like to have everything ready, so when the harness is on, they get reward of going bye bye with us right away, not finding keys, shoes, cell phone, anything like that. Harness on, out we go.

We do not put our hands over face either. Just slip their heads into the space, that is the easy part.

I find it very important to keep a loop in the buckle when putting on, this makes it much better.

    Jane

I can't wait to try out Tyraels aviator. I bet he will like it more than the flight suit. Soze's suit was alright, but she HATED the thing and would never ever calm down once she was in it...at least not for like 30 mins.

Hmm... I ordered a flight suit for Jinxy. I wish the aviators came in his size, they look less constraining, but we'll see how it goes.

This is an interesting topic Makes me sad that they don't make aviators small enough for lovies though *has fingers crossed that they'll make one eventually*
Sarah - let me know how the flight suit works! I want one for Squeakers but was afraid on how it'd turn out.... I can imagine all the walks we'd be taking!
Overall though, It seems lots of people like them
