    First time lovie owners

I think this might be worth (once completed) being a sticky in the lovie section
All of us who have had experience with lovies please add to this and modify.

I'd like to compile a list of what you need before you bring your lovebird home, consisting of all these and other things that other members add:

    - Cage - proper dimensions for 1 or 2 birds, bar spacing, dome top or flat, grates etc...)
    - toys
    - food assortment
    - proper treats

And it might be worth making a list of things for first time lovebird owners to avoid getting for their bird. Example:

    - happy huts (trust me, not having one has saved me from the wrath of Skittles)
    - mirrors
    - paper to shred
    - nesting boxes

Also listing some pros and cons of getting two birds vs just one and the right steps to take if you want to get a second.

PM ME ALL THE THINGS YOU WANT ME TO ADD!!!

    Re: First time lovie owners

I know the general forum has sticky topics regarding pellets, health hazards etc..

But I think having a "Newbie" guide for each parrot section would definitely be an asset, especially for the Lurkers who dont want to sign up just yet and want to find their information!

    Great Idea!
A couple of questions... what's a happy hut & why is it a bad idea? And a breeding box for a love bird looks like...?

    Re: First time lovie owners

A happy hut is typically a triangular tent which can be suspended from the roof of the cage and is usually fuzzy, it allows for a lovie to be more secure when sleeping or as a play-toy.

In some lovie owner's cases, (also including mine) where they have female lovies (Hens) anything resembling a nest or a place to hide in, creates a whole new lovebird.
Skittles in my case, becomes very nasty and will bite when approached, she will also never leave the happy hut. When I first bought her, she had splayed legs and arthritis due to NEVER leaving the toy lol.

That would be your typical happy hut.
But also, keep in mind, lots of people still use them, I just recommend avoiding them if you already know your lovie becomes Mr.Hyde when they have one

Here is a breeding box style that is usually used:

I have seen breeding boxes used with a single lovebird as a "safe haven" for sleeping.

With TWO lovebirds who are male and female, it does stimulate breeding behaviour (which is typically why a lot of people say to leave it out of the equation if you dont want to breed)

    Re: First time lovie owners

Just a note, happy huts really aren't safe, because of the way they are constucted (lots of clear, exposed thread quilting the sides together). There are much safer tents to use, but they should still be inspected often!

I was actually thinking that we should have a sticky with minimum cage sizes for the most common pet birds. You know, like "Budgie: 18 by 18. Cockatiel: 20 by 20" etc. Maybe that along with "bird basics" that apply to all birds (which most things do), that everyone can refer to, rather then one or two species specific ones.

I think it is a great idea! I have been "lurking" and researching and have decided to get a lovie. Now, where to go for this information?!?

    Re: First time lovie owners

I caught a glimpse I think...can't find it now...you're working on a total noob guide for lovebirds right? I love it! and I think you're doing a great job! Perhaps when it's done may I cc it on my aviary website?

Anyway, I think you need to add a section on how to choose the right cage cover, and a danger warning for cardboard paper tubes like the paper towel tubes and such. Ceiling fans and other family pets like dogs...we had a dog for 3 yrs who up and ate a lovebird out fo the blue one day....so it goes to show, the one moment you don't follow protocol, mother nature will win.

    Great job!
