Re: Axolotl (lots of PICTURES) :D

No worries with my babies today, they eat like horses...

There is aqua fun days at the pet store, so plastic plants,
frozen food packs and hidey- holes were "buy one, get one free".

My tank looks much nicer now.
    Just compare:
    the old tank

    The new tank

What do you think now, Barb?

And you wont believe it, but they had their first frozen food
today of all their whole life (they only had boring pellets so far).
I bought two packs of frozen blood worms...
I was feeding one of the several ice cubes in one pack--
They could not believe it and thought they are in heaven
that so many yummy worms were swimming past...

Max is quite a bully, he even chased Suzie out of her new
hidey hole today, and then did not even sleep himself in it,
just was an search for some trouble.

I am sure he is male.

    Max, the bully

Ha, now she is BACK in the hidey place.

I wonder how long it takes Max to kick her out again...
although, he just found the place where all the worms sedimented...

Re: Axolotl (lots of PICTURES) :D

    Thanks Barb!
    Hurray!

    Hi Mel,
    well, they are Salamanders.
The closest relative is the Mexican Tiger Salamander,
and they can be bred with each other with live offspring.
Axolotl have a mutation so they have a underdeveloped
Thyroid so they dont produce enough thyroid hormone
so they never transform into adult salamanders.
They always stay tadpoles and even lay eggs as tadpoles.

    Cool isnt it?
They also can regenerate pretty much all organs when injured.
So they can regrow arms, legs, eyes, parts of the heart and brain...
Thats why researchers use them in the lab.

They are absolute cool, and believe it or not, even as
"primitive" animals as they are, they seem to have
    different characters.
I can see that in my two...

If you have a tank or want to get a aquarium,
    get some!
They are not very expensive (20$ for an adult)
and also not very expensive to keep.

    I only can recommend them!

    Even more pictures!!!!

Finally a good shot of Max.
Here you can also see the little stumps of the (re-) growing legs.

    Do we get more food??

I checked on the net, and NO, they are old enough and big enough to
have full gown legs. So why do they have these stumps, then?
Well, I suspect because they were kept so densely together at uni,
    so they injured each other....

That makes me even more happy that I got two of them now...

On one of the websites of a German axolotl breeder
he says that these animals are soooo stupid, they do not
have a favorite cave and do not come back
    to it, only by accident.
    well...

My decorative barrel cave was not used for 2 days,
the animals did not find the way in.
And Max still has no clue...
    (Males...)
But Suzie found out yesterday that the barrel is actually
a cave and not just decoration.
She needed a bit to find in and find it comfortable.

Today, she just swam in, just like that!, without any hazzle.
    Obviously, she has learned that.

Too stupid to have a favorite cave.
    Ha!

They also eat out of my hands.
Just with new foods they have some difficulties to find out it is food.
They sure know the axolotl pellets they had in the institute,
and they love the frozen blood worm,
but the frozen dried fish food tablets (with lots of yummy insect bits)
and fresh things like the the wood lice I found need a bit of training,
    I think.
Suzie pretty much ignored the wood louse I gave her,
was more interested in her mirror image.

Cute! I love little salamanders, they're all so cute.

How to do pronounce Axolotl? It seems like a mouthful.

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

    ehmm....
I think it is pronounced: ax-Oh-lot-uhl.

Yeah, they are real cuties, arent they?

I am so happy I got them, when I think of them
being back in their container at uni without
    proper admiration...

    Even more pics...

    The two cuties together...

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

    Yes, Sara, get some!
    They are awesome.
And not boring at all-- when I feed them frozen blood worms,
they are all over the place.
And they are not very difficult too keep and not very expensive.
And they are really special for a fish tank.

I got them some more space-age pepples...
    yeees....
If I was an axolotl I would shoot my owner,
because they really are tasteless, but I wanted
some more hiding- space and these were the only
    big pepples in the store.
    They can swallow small gravel!!!!!

    Max on the rocks

    YUMMY!!!

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

Yeah, I actually like her better, too.
She just seems to be more curious and intelligent.
And she is also very photogenic.
I am pretty sure she is a girl...

But they are both real cuties.
And they both take food out of my hands.
They are not shy at all, no wonder after all their
    encounters with the students...
