What also would be a possibility is calling him "Suz-HE" then...

Well, I already had my cockatiel transforming into the other sex.
He just got new flight feathers, and they are without any spots,
    just uniform dark grey.
In addition to his unstopable singing, he is a boy.
I will name him "Waiata" that is Maori for song.

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

Hey Cheryl, I am pretty sure you can get them in Canada.
They are originally from Mexico and they are VERY common as pets.
If you happen to come by a aquatic specialized pet store,
I am sure they will have them. Even in different colours.
The size I have got is around 20$ (for 10-15cm).
    They are really cool!

Here is Max looking out of his hidey-hole.
    Isnt he cute?
They look so peaceful and chilled out.
But beware if I offer them worms!
Then they transform into mighty hunters!

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

Wow... I never thought I'd ever say something like that is cute, but boy are they!
At first, I was like "huh?!" (Your signature confused me for awhile ) And then I read this, and my new thought pattern is "I want one!!!"
Leave it to you to make me want another pet that I never even knew existed!

On a side note- Can they be housed with betta fish, or would they eat my little sushi? (Ironic...isn't it? lol!)

    There.

    They'd probably eat your Betta

My yellow-bellied newt ate my two females and then gulped down my really expensive male.

So Axolotl are bigger :P definitely don't put 'em together

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

Yeah, I have seen in the axolotl forum that people
did put their Betta in with axolotl and they became "Sushi".
The might look cute and innocent, but--
    Axolotl are feisty predators.
I am planning to add a few guppy as feeder fish in my tank,
some students in the student lab I demonstrate for promised
me to bring me some pregnant females.
Guppy will reproduce like mad and provide the axolotl
with some high quality food and exercise.

They are available in Canada but their popularity is low that pet stores often don't carry them. That being said, if someone wanted one, most pet stores could order one for you since the suppliers have them. They are very cheap to buy.

How quickly do they attain full size? I ask because the one in the Nature Museum display is a full grown adult at about 1ft long and quite thick as well. That 10gal won't last too long at the rate their eating!

Great pics! Although I am normally not a fan of albinos, Suze has won me over!

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

Lisa, Suzie is not an albino!
She is a leucistic, in contrast to albino they are able
to produce colour, but the colour cells are not able to
    spread over the whole body.
Suzie has dark eyes and is getting freckles all over her face,
she will end up with dark spots over her head and body.
She also will have black toes (when they finally regrow).

Albino have red eyes and never get any dark spots.

They need around 1 year to sexual mature, but because they are
neotenic (always stay in larval stage) they grow all their
life. They can get quite old, max. 20 years.
I have heart them getting up to 35cm and 400g heavy.
(they used to eat them in Mexico when they still existed in the wild)
Thy grow faster if you feed them on earthworms (their favorite food)
instead of frozen bloodworm and pellets.

Max is already 15cm long, Suzie 12cm.
They are busy regenerating their limbs.

I have my two babies in a 40l tank, I dont know how many
    US gallons that is?
But they are not very active (favorite past time sitting around....)
so they dont need much space.
I am also member in the axolotl forum, and many people
there keep 3 (!!!) axolotl in a tank my size.
Well, I would NOT put three of them in my tank,
I think that is too small.

I wonder why they are no popular pets in Canada?
I always thought of them as alternative to goldfish,
but until now I never got one.
But to be honest, I dont even know how common they
are in Germany, I never especially looked for them there.
    Although I always wanted one!

    Yes, they are cheap.
Axolotl the size of mine are around 20$NZ,
    similar prize in Europe.
Reason is, they are easy to keep and to breed,
and when they start breeding, they lay HUNDREDS of eggs at once.

    Ahhhh...
I just could go on for ages about them.

Re: Axolotl (update and lots of new PICTURES!!!)

    Katie, get one!

(if they are legal in your state, I know there are states where they arent,
    like California)

Yes, they look like little puppies.

No wonder they get mixed up with another american
    aquatic salamander, the mudpuppy necturus.

easy to keep, interesting to watch, great pets.

The only thing I can think of what makes their
popularity low is, they are not very active and
sit motionless most of the time.
All afternoon Suzie was sitting on the front side of the tank,
where I could see and admire her, she was sitting there in
one certain spot and did not move a millimeter.
She only occsionally flicked her gills.
    Very relaxed animals.
Except, if there is food involved....
