Don't know what to title this as..

Okay, today hasn't been a great day. Well, actually the last few weeks haven't been great at all.
Pepper has lost 4grams, and hasn't been eating. I only noticed today how underweight she feels and only noticed how much Mini has been food guarding, and bullying this morning.
I feel so terrible. I have been so stressed with the work move that I have to admit I've been lapse. I can't believe I haven't even noticed, especially as Pepper has been so desperate not to get out of her bed cage in the mornings, and so excited about going to bed at night. Two very unusual behaviors for my baby.
I can only imagine she has been desperate to spend time alone in which to eat and drink without interruption, and not constantly be hassled by Mini.
I made a heartbreaking decision this morning, and have decided to perhaps rehome Mini.
I love the poor bird to death, but I honestly haven't the space I had imagined when I took her on, and Pepper is so stressed even when they are separated. I think this is the right decision for me, and I hope in the long run it will be for Mini.
As some of you may know, I volunteer at a Rabbit and Guinea pig sanctuary, we also take birds and other animals in when necessary, as we are also twinned with a local wildlife sanctuary. Mini is currently staying there, but I do already know someone who is interested in her, and someone who is also a parrot owner himself. He already knows Mini and Pepper well, and is more than happy to take her on. If he hadn't offered, I doubt this would be happening. But to be honest, I feel a sense of relief through my tears.
Anyway, I just though I would let you all know. I understand if I receive any harsh comments, but I do hope you can all understand why I made this choice.

Explain to me WHY you would receive harsh comments?

You didn't bring Mini home under the impressions you COULDN'T look after another bird. That situation didn't arise until things got to this point. If you brought her home, knowing you didn't have the space then, only then could I see harsh comments.

I've been in your situation Lee.... and it is honestly the toughest decision EVER to make (in the bird world at least).

I went through it with Kirby and it was the best decision for my Skittles and my skin. Rehoming Kirby (despite me now, not knowing where she went) was the wisest thing to do.

Don't feel guilty with Mini's food guarding. I posted this almost exact same scenario a few months ago about Kiwi. I corrected this behavior by having two of each dish in the cage until I noticed Kiwi sharing.

However, I still occasionally notice Kiwi guarding but it's definitely not as bad as prior.

YOU and ONLY you know what is best for your living situation AND for Pepper. It's a tough decision

    We're here for you Lee

{{{hugs}}} Lee. I understand exactly! Remember some time ago, we got a budgie at the pet store. Initially it seemed he & Sully hit it off just fine. But not long after I noticed the same things in Sully you are seeing in Pepper. Sully lost weight, couldn't wait to get out of the cage. But spent all his time on his gym, sleeping. He was hungry, worn out & stressed. The new budgie wouldn't let him eat or rest. We rehomed the newbie. Another cage was not an option.
You have to do what's right for Pepper.

    Lee,

I understand the fear of the criticism. I had to re-home my conure, Cosmo, to my brother, after Tini's accident because I could not dedicate the time to him anymore. They each needed to be out of their cages separately, etc - and he was not a happy bird. Anyhow, I did not post anything about my struggle with this on here because I didn't want to deal with any negativity on top of an already very stressful situation. I know now that this was the best decision I could have made for Cosmo, Tini, and myself - all of us are so much happier and healthier. You are the only one in your situation and you know what's best for Pepper, Mini, and you - it will be okay! Hang in there and big big hugs - I know it isn't easy.

I know what its like to receive harsh comments on here lee, and I know that it took some kind of guts to post this on here. I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure this was the best decision for your flock.

*hugs* it is better to rehome and have two happy healthy birds than try to force two that don't get along to live together, you are thinking of what is best for the birds and that is what matters.

You are doing what is best for both birds and yourself. How could anyone fault you for that? It would be worse if you just pretended that things would work out and something happened to Pepper. You'd never forgive yourself. You're doing the right thing even tho it isn't easy and it isn't really making you feel better just yet.

Re: Don't know what to title this as..

you berk- why didnt you call me?
Mini is a beautiful, sweet little bird- and you took her home out of a horrible situation believing you could give her a great forever home. but i think Mini has decided other wise and just is not happy and willing to share with another bird. It's just her personality. If she had turned out like another Pepper or Sam or even Sparks we wouldnt be having this thread- but Mini is Mini- and i think this is her decision as much as yours. She's clearly decided she doesnt want to be around Pepper or share her life with another girl.

If you need help, or this new home doesnt work out- i can take her for a bit as i am lucky to have more room- or Bob and Di might be able to help,

Dont expect criticism for this hun- you're one of the best bird owners i know- Pepper and Mini have better set ups than Sammy, and an absolutely devoted Daddy- just Mini has clearly decided this isnt for her, and Pepper is too much of a good sister to turn around and give her the bite she needs. That is that. Being able to recognise that and take the hard step to remedy it is a lot harder for you than just carrying on and hoping you could fix it.

As to the 4 grams? I tried to get Sammy to eat some fresh foods by following Chris's example. Didnt work as well for me. Sam nibbled the egg and cheese but not the fruit- when i weighed him he was about 2.5-3 grams down and he had been eating some stuff and is a lot littler that Pepper to start with. Heck a big poop is a gram or more lol- That could just have been an empty crop for a day or so.

Although I'm interested to know if Pepper is still behaving well or if she's going to turn back into the mischief maker of old lol

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

I have no doubts that you're doing the right thing for your birds and your situation. Sometimes animals just don't work out in a particular home (e.g. some dogs that aren't good around kids). It isn't anyone's fault and it's better to ensure a good and happy home for everyone involved than to try and soldier on.

This isn't you just dumping Mini off Lee. We have all been full circle with you from the day you brought Mini home, through the really hard times, and now to this decision. Any of us can see you gave it your all, made this difficult decision, and are making sure that Mini is going somewhere well she'll get the love and special attention she wants and needs. You absolutely don't deserve any harsh criticism from anyone!!! And if you get any here from anyone, WE'LL TAKE CARE OF THEM!!!! :-)

I'm sorry, Lee. I know that your decision was not an easy one. You're looking out for Mini AND Pepper.

I hope that everything works out well. Sounds like Miss Mini is going to a wonderful new home. Maybe her new human(s) can join TF and keep us all posted!
