how do you stop budgies from breeding?
Hey everyone,
I'm thinking a little ahead, but I only want Fibi and Sky to raise 1 clutch right now, and all over the net it says, that when the first birds start wandering out of the nest, they're already starting clutch #2! I don't want that because another pair Eve and Reggie have been mating and showing other good signs of babies to come. So how do I stop Fibi from continuing to breed?
I think I remember reading something along the lines of putting white marbles in place of the eggs, but I'd rather not kill the eggs, and stop her before she lays.
Is there any way?
Thanks

P.S. 4 days til the babies hatch!:haha

You can take away the nest box, rearrange toys and perches, and even possibly split them up.... It's your decision!

stop the eggs
Here's an article that sounds like she will already be ready to lay the second clutch, before I even have a chance to remove the nestbox.
"Females lay anywhere from two to nine eggs which are then incubated 18 days. Chicks hatch naked and blind and can be fed while lying on their backs. The female feeds the chicks for the first few weeks while the male feeds her. Once the chicks are old enough to require less brooding the hen will spend more time away from the box and both parents will feed the chicks. Eventually the male takes over almost completely and will finish the weaning while the hen starts a new clutch. Chicks start eating on their own almost immediately after fledgling. Do not sell them at this time though. Once a chick has been eating completely on its own for at least a week, without begging from the parents, it can be considered weaned."
Is there ways to avoid this...or do I have to use the "marble method"?
Thanks

Congrats on your budgies!
I think the parents should be seperated sadly because if they keep on mating even if there isn't a nesting box then the female budgie would die from exaustion.

Hey
Thanks
But when would be the time to move out the male? When the babies are out of the box, or what?

Five Eggs Laid!
Re: stop the eggs
actually...
with budgies, once the babies are out of the box, the male takes on most of the feeding duties, as well as showing the chicks around and showing them what to eat on their own... so I would not remove the male.
When our budgies had babies I removed the nestbox as soon as all the babies were out, and threw out the two eggs that the hen had already layed of the second clutch. After that, she layed one more egg on the floor which she completely ignored and went out of the breeding mode.

stopping the birds
Alright,
So when all the babies are out, I will take whatever eggs and give them to my other breeding hen Eve. Sounds good.
Thanks
