Broody female tiels with male tiels around

I've already posted before that I am considering getting a hand reared baby cockatiel 'friend' for my existing 5 year old female tiel later this year, to be caged separately, and have made contact with a potential breeder.

However, as my tiel lays eggs from time to time (not always in the ususal breeding season) and has had hormone treatment from my vet in the past it might be preferable to have another female tiel, but its a bit hard to tell the sex at a young age - mind you I could be up for double hormone treatment costs!

Has anyone had experience of adding a male tiel to an existing female (or vice versa) and if so whether the female became more broodier because of the male's presence?

While I would prefer a male myself this time, I dont want to put Jaspa's health at risk.

    Thanks!

Re: Broody female tiels with male tiels around

my females hormones went nuts once my male reached an age where he was capable of breeding. Though she wasn't as tame as he was when I got him. My housemates friend added a male to her very tame female and the female wants nothing to do with the male though the male chases her around with his mating dance.

i just added a 4 month old male to my existing 11 month old female and he tried and tried to mount her, heart wings and everything! but now he doesnt want anything to do with her but she freaks out if she cant have him in visual contact! its funny because i cant spend time with the original female without him hanging around as well. its like a bad date.

Thanks, interesting variances. I will ask my vet also before I take it any further. I guess I could rehome an older female which would be okay too - I would just love another baby bird!
