Re: is my bird dying
My friend has a tiel thats 25.She got him when he was 8mnths old in 82.
Hers is blind now and doesnt come out of the cage anymore much either but still eats and such.I think there comes a time when you have to expect the worst.I dont imagine at that age they are feeling thier best and that would make them grumpy. Also I imagine they dont have the best balance either so maybe its just easier to sleep on the bottom..I wonder what "age" they are in thier 20's, kinda like my dog is 10 so he like a 70yo.

Re: is my bird dying
Hi,
Apart from sleeping at the bottom of the cage Tommy is still like a youngster,he flew into the plant in his picture on here.
He is still angry at times but still talks very well & sings till he drives me mad hahha. He used to adore my Husband by now when he sits near the cage Tommy comes flying over & tries to bite him,he has us in hysterics.

Re: is my bird dying
Tommy sure is one handsome old man, you should be very proud to have him live so long because you must be doing something right to have him be happy, healthy and very old.
Does Tommy have some sort of bed in his cage for him to sleep on or did he always sleep on a perch? If you dont have a nice platform bed or hidey hut maybe Tommy would like one and then he wouldnt have to sleep on the bottom of his cage. Boomer used to sleep in his big food cup until we made him a nice bed out of a basket and hung it up, put in a cotton cloth and now he wouldnt dream of sleeping on a perch ever again.
Fly Free Boomer, we will forever love you.

Hi .
Yes its my sons bird, actually you have made us have a recount & he is possibly already 29 we didnt count before we had him.I think he was about 6 months when we got him. We only had him one week & he was talking haha & hasnt stopped since. My son is 35 & he was six or seven when we got Tommy. We have also been in this house 26 years & had Tommy for at least 3 years before we moved here so we know we cant have made a mistake with the dates.

Re: is my bird dying
I'm glad he's back to himself!
he actually looks a LOT better than the other teil i know that age- but he's a lutino coloured one- so i think it shows more
maybe he just struggles to balance a bit anbd that's why he sleeps on the floor now? you can get these brilliant wire shelves/platforms for them... do you think he's use one of those? i got mine from petdiscounters.com but i've seen them on ebay too

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

Brand New Egg
Re: is my bird dying
Hi. I'm new to the site and dont know how to post a message... We got our cockatiel 7 years ago at a pet shop. It was not hand raised and has deformed feet from not being in the right cage. He has never been extremely active as far as bouncing around, etc. He was always laid back and is calm. Since his feet are bent, he seems to not want to sit on the perch all the time but instead, hang out on the bottom on a towel. He eats and drinks daily. His poop is ok. Same as its been. He is at least over 8 years old. His nostrils are not completely clear but are not completely clogged either. He also has recently been sitting flat on his belly instead of just his feet lately as if he wants to rest his feet. When he does this, he falls asleep. If he is on our lap, he does this and closes his eyes. One time he fell off his perch and seemed slow to get back on the perch. I dont have any vets close by and are afraid to drive him a long distance due to stress. Anyone have any tips on what to look for or what it can be?

Re: is my bird dying
You need to get that bird to a vet even if it's a long drive. He could die if you don't get him there soon. It sounds like he is really ill. Im not trying to scare you, just get across the importance of taking him to the vets. When a bird sits on the bottom of the cage like that it's a really bad sign. Especially if they can't get up after. It also sounds like he may be suffering from a repertory infection, if that is the case he needs antibiotics immediately.

Re: is my bird dying
Hi Folks.
Thought you deserve an update on Tommy.
Well he is now 29 years old & as wicked as ever.He doesnt look any different from his picture last year. He sings or talks most of the day, especially if I am on the phone or there is a good program on the television. Anyone want a bird going cheep, hahaha joking.
He runs around the kitchen floor & attacks the cat.
