They are very beautiful birds, I really like them. They are like IRN, not popular as cage birds due to bad press, but make wonderful pets. When I was working at Petsmart they had the most beautiful and friendly Mustache parakeet!

Re: Mousetached Parakeet aka Java Parakeet
From what I've read, their only real downfalls are that they are quite avid chewers and need to be handled regularly to stay tame...but of course, given lots of toys and attention...and socialization would likely quell these issues.
They also are known to be good talkers, clearer than the IRN but not as loud. They are known to be much quieter in general than IRNs.
Anyway, its' another parrot I'm definitely putting on my list of potentials My hubby thinks they're just gorgous as well...not that we'd choose a bird based on how it looks..but the other qualities I think are quite impressive as well

Yes, but depening upon the sub species some are more obviouse than others when they are mature. In the Majors and the Faciatas the males have the red upper mandables (get them at 2 yrs of age) and the hens have black upper and lower mandables.
The Javas both the male and females upper and lower red mandables. However if you look at the pic of my female, you will notice the pink of her chest color goes up the side of her neck where if you look at the pic of the male it does not. Also the females are slightly lighter in color. THIS is how you visually sex mature Javas.
To sex birds under 2 yrs of age you must DNA them.

How do I look being a green and pink cockatoo?
I personally don't care for the Javas. They are smaller, more on the hyper side and sadly too many people don't have a clue about breeding these birds. There are WAY too few of the Java and most have been mixed with the Faciatas. There are 8 subspeces of Moustached keet. Only 3 made it the U.S. when they were importing them - those would be the Java, Faciata and the Major.
As for the "chewing thing" that is a hen thing. Hand fed males make MUCH better pets than hens. Hens are aggressive by nature and are always quick to take offence of a quick movment. In the off season males should not be caged with the hens. The gals delight in harrassing the boys they can also get quite ugly and start fighting as well.
Here is a pretty hepful link http://home.wanadoo.nl/psittaculawor...-alexandri.htm
Thanks SO much that is very informative. I didn't realize there were so many sub species. I'm guessing it would be difficult to find a breeder of Faciatas in my area They are absolutely stunning, and I guess I'd go for a dna'd male as opposed to a hen. Thanks again

Faciatas are mostly what you find when looking for 'staches. These birds can live 25 to 30 years if well cared for.
