    New Tiel Momma

So, this weekend I noticed the little guy, who would eat until he exploded has started to eat less formula. I did see him eating millet and cheerios. Then today I was going to bring them down to 2 feedings/day, and he didn't want his morning feeding. I put the fresh foods in, plus wheat bread which is new, and I saw him eating that. So...now the question is...is he ill or weaning himself? I felt squishiness in his crop this morning before I tried feeding him, so maybe he had just finished eating pellets? He is already on Baytril for minor aspiration from last Saturday, so I'm not sure how he could be sick.

    Re: New Tiel Momma

I am really frustrated/scared. Davis, my baby tiel doesn't want formula. I have seen him eat bird food. 10 days ago he was 74 grams. Today he is 68. 11 days ago I slightly aspirated him, so he has been on .2 ml of baytril. Today is supposed to be the last day of it. He is not sneezing anymore, so it seems to have done it's job.

I don't know what to do. When I went to feed him this morning, his crop was squishy, or has stuff in it. I don't know if it is left over from last night's feeding...which would be a problem, or if he had been eating the bird food.

I think the reason I am more franic about it is I don't have any money to take him back into the vet. I don't know what to do.

Meanwhile, his cage mate had gained 4 grams and looks great. So that's good...but it make him look all the more poor.

Babies will lose weight as they wean.

If he is refusing formula but you see him eating other food, he should just be weaning and not ill. It's normal for his crop to not be as full when he eats as compared to when you handfeed.

Just monitor his weight the same time each morning. Keep offering him a feeding at night. If need be - call your vet for advice.

birds drop weight fast when they are weaning. if he is eating on his own then he is trying to wean. i would keep an eye on that crop to make sure it empties

Yes, Ellen and javi are right... they will loose so much it might be a little scary, especailly if you have never weaned a bird before. When I had my first clutch of babies, I thought that there was a plague or something because all my babies seemed to be loosing weight at the same time. Needless to say, they were just weaning and they were supposed to do that. As timon and puma would say, Hakuna Matata!

Ok, thank you for your comments. I thought I read somewhere about what percentage of body weight they lose during weaning, but I can't find it now.

Ok, according to birdsnways 10-15 % is acceptable...but prefereable for it to only be 1 or 2. The article says to make sure they eat evening formula..how do you make sure if they refuse to eat until the crop is full? I'm not comfortable forcing it...sounds dangerous to me.
