umm they can't mate have you ever heard the saying birds of a feather flock together well that's basically what it's saying is that birds of the same breed can mate but not with different breeds

I have seen Male Parakeets mating with female lovebirds, I suspect no hybrids will come out of this cross, but they do and will mate, they are parrots after all

seems like if both parrots are about the same size(males of the smaller species are closer in size to females of the other species) and they speak parrot?

here is a video of the mating taking place(1 minute mark)

Re: Can female lovebird and male parakeet mate?

they cannot produce offspring, but to be honest, lovebirds especially will mate with anything. Perches, socks, stuffed animals, toys. Doesn't mean Sammy thinks he's going to produce a fluffy, jingling baby. It just means he's happy and randy.

And actually the way those two are behaving the budgie is the male... and in lovebirds, females are usually bigger (not always - i've know weeny girls and huge boys, but usually).

They won't breed. She might try to lay eggs, but unless there's another lovebird sneaking in, they won't be fertile. And if they are fertile, she's cheating on the bug lol (which lovies will do too). They're not well named birds. The lovies I know seem to ahve no real loyalty, and are perfectly happy to turn on their partners and abuse them - so the budgie owner needs to watch out. A lovie is stronger and more vicious that a budgie, and that big beak can easily sever a toe or two really quickly.

Thanks Lee for the adorable sig!

I wonder why there are so many videos of lovebirds mating on Youtube. Do people enjoy watching them getting down or something?? Weird.
