    Confused about mutations...

My little guy(or possilby girl) is at the point of six months now - which is when the bird will start to show it's adult feathers, correct? I'm waiting to see if I will be able to tell if my cockatiel is male or female. The breeder said the daddy is a white faced cockateil, Mom is a cinnamon/lutino mix, and Baby may be pearl. Do those two make a pearl? How do I know if he/she's a pearl for sure? And, will I be able to tell the gender with this one? Thank you guys so much I seem to be a little lost with breeds of the cockatiel.

Well, it's probably still too early to tell the gender - he/she is about 6 months, but still has a bright yellow head and bright orange cheeks. The marking are very apparent and is still yellow all over. It can take up to 8 months to tell, right?

Sorry I'm at my parents house for the weekend, but I'll be able to get you a picture on Sunday! She/he looks exactly like a pearl from the research I did today, but is just peaking 6 months years old so it might still be too early to tell. I'll for sure post a pic tomorrow though!

    Re: Confused about mutations...

    Hey Jennie,

The pearl is a sex linked mutation, so it would mean her daddy would be either a whiteface pearl (boys lose their pearlings as they mature) or a whiteface split to pearl. If mum was a cinnamon lutino - then your baby would have to be a female if she is a pearl.

The pearlings are an even patterning of the feathers where the tips of the feathers are either yellow or white. I have a number of different pearls, so if you want to check out for sure, have a look at my website...

Usually the first moult is between 4 and 6 months so she should be going through it if she hasn't already. I've never had to wait until 8 months for a bird to go through its moult...

    Hope this helps.

    Re: Confused about mutations...

Hello is that your bird in your avatar??

Femals will keep there pearls after they molt. Males will loose there pearls, so lets say your cockatiel is yellow with pearls. When they molt and they are male, they will be one solid color.

So if you bird still has those markings most likely a femal. Also, is your bird vocal? Males are usually the whistlers and the singers, while the femal is more quite.

BUT this is not always accurate.

Thank you so much - that helped immensely. My little Raptor is a girl then. And yes, that's her in the picture when she was a few weeks old :P but i was going to post a current picture. Guess I don't have to now.

    Re: Confused about mutations...

Having a closer look at the pic, Raptor seems to have a solid yellow crest. This would mean that she is pied as well, although I would like to see a more recent pic to be sure. However, if the information from the breeder is correct and Mum is not a visual pearl - then Raptor would still be a girl, just a pearl-pied girl.

    A bit like my Gucci?

    Re: Confused about mutations...

Provided the breeder gave you the correct information and Mum was NOT a visual pearl - then yes she is a girl. However, the breeder did not mention that Dad was at least a whiteface split pearl and pied and Mum was also split to pied...
