Im from Texas too! I just wanted to second the idea of soaking the ladder in the food-coloring dye overnight. Also- boil the water first- add the dye- and immediately put the ladder in. The heat softens the wood a bit to absorb more dye. I only soak my stuff for 30minutes- and it comes out with bright brilliant colors. Ive been making a bunch of stuff in preparation for a new lovebird and its worked great for me.
